Welcome to the PP unit! Your first day on your own was definitely filled with a LOT. Just rest in the fact that eventually you will gain a sense of control. It takes time to develop a good work flow and even when you do there are times when an emergency mucks it all up. Work on getting a brain sheet to keep you organized, take a DEEEEEP breath and get back in there! It will all come together and you will look back on this day and wonder WHY you were ever so stressed. :)

I work at a hospital that does not employ LPNs. My hospital is applying for magnet status so they are "encouraging" all the nurses to get their BSN. Eventually, they will switch over to hiring only BSNs to be in compliance with the magnet status or so they say. They are currently removing all non-BSN nurses from charge positions.

I'm in my practicum and was having a difficult time starting IVs until a nurse gave me this trick: look for a vein that forms a Y then put your needle right where the two veins come together (right at the vertex of the v part of the Y) then the tail of the Y holds the cannula (so make sure it is straight before you pick that spot). Her rational is that the vein is more anchored and will not roll as much. Ever since she told me that trick, I haven't missed an IV (yet, as I'm sure it will eventually happen in the future!). However, this approach has upped my success rate greatly even on my more plump and frail patients! Hope this helps

I agree with Dee78...I would take an online version of the class. Our school lets us sit in on lectures, but we have the added flexibility of 1) four days instead of 1 to take an exam; 2)If we have sick kids, missing a lecture doesn't count against you. 3)Extra materials through the WebCt class (i.e. the exact same lecture other students are hearing - nice for studying) 4)I don't really have to rely on anyone to take care of the kids UNLESS it is a clinical day, so when and if it happens it is fairly rare and the person I ask is much more likely to step in and help out.
