Can't find work after one year, now what?
I have been unemployed for the past year due to downsizing in my nursing home. I have been unable to find a job for a year now. I have been a LTC geriatric nurse for the past 8 yrs. I have reapplied to hospitals and have updated my ACLS . My problem is that most hospitals look at my experience in long term care as a deficit, not an asset. It is as if I having been working at all for the past 8 yrs. I have been advised to take a nursing refresher course, but they are $1700. It's not like I haven't been working for 8 yrs, and I was a hospital based nurse prior to my nursing home career. I am resentful that I am being told to take a refresher when I feel I haven't forgotten anything. Any advice as to how to proceed and how to procure a job would help.

Lower Stress and Quieter Nursing Careers?
I had to leave the ER also due to stress related illness. I went into nursing home LTC nursing, however, most nursing homes are now cuting back on RNs since they can run efficiently with LPNs and 3-5 RNs for the whole building for all shifts. I suggest dialysis nursing or recovery room nursing. Quieter, but you can still use your ER skills in both areas. Good luck

night shift and new diabetic
Are there any night shift nurses out there who are diabetics and can give me advice. When do you eat, how do you exercise, when do you take your insulin, etc. My blood sugar is running high, and I may be a diabetic, so I am preparing myself with all the information I can get

Nurses struggling with mental illness
I have applied for SSID, but it seems to be taking a very long time. Meanwhile, the IOT plans to discharge me in 1-2weeks. Should I take a job I was offered? I just need to have some confidence, but my anxiety gets in the way

Nurses struggling with mental illness
I am involved in a divorce from my x. My job related stress led me to go into intensive outpatient therapy. I am not working. The manic depression I was experiencing caused me to spend all my cash, so now I am desperately trying to hold onto my house. My divorce lawyer says that my x's lawyer thinks I am trying to manipulate the system by "faking it" since I am a college educated woman while my x only has 3 yrs of college and earns alot of cash. I am about to lose my health care benefits. Do I take care of my health? Do I stay in IOT or try to work perdiem for a while just to earn cash. I am going to shoot myself in the foot if I work in order to pay the bills even if I feel I am not well enough to work? AAAAHHH!!!

Nurses struggling with mental illness
Dear Doglover, I have also struggled with poor judgements, anxiety disorder which caused me to make mistakes, which caused more anxiety...You may be obsessing over your past. You have to let go of it. Remember the saying: The past is history the future is a mystery, the present is a gift from God, which is why it is called a present. By engaging in obsessive thinking, you are creating a treadmill for yourself. You are not a victim, or a survivor, but a wonderful, intelligent human being ( see what I learned in IOT?)

Nurses struggling with mental illness
Just wanted to say hello to everyone. The intensive outpatient therapy is helping. The meds are definitely helping. Not working is the best therapy, however, I definitely am worried about the bills. i am still waiting for SSID to kick in. Meanwhile, does anyone out there have any suggestions for obtaining cheap health insurance if you are not able to work due to mental illness?

Nurses struggling with mental illness
Hi Sara, You MUST tell your mother IMMEDIATELY. If you are over the age of 16, but still under her health care coverage, all she needs to know is that you need to speak with someone. If you stll don't want to tell her at this point, then At college campuses, they often have counseling centers. The Jewish Federation and Catholic Charities offer counseling based upon a sliding scale of ability to pay. Your local hospital might also have an outpatient psych clinic. You can apply for Charity Care. With having dealt with depression most of my life, believe me, the only one you are hiding it from is yourself. Your mom probably knows on some level that you are depressed. Remember, she loves you and wants whats best for you. No matter how painful it may be for her to hear that you are having it rough, in the end she probably will be your best support.

Nurses struggling with mental illness
Hi, I've been diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorder (bpd). I am now on Depakote. I was on Celexa, but it stopped helping and I stopped taking it. Both my therapist and my doc want me to quit nursing. I am reluctant to do so, as it is my only source of income. I tried working agency, but couldn't get enough dayshift work. My next theory is either hospice or private duty. Maybe these would be less stressful. I find that observing my relgious faith helps me, however, my faith demands abstention from work on Saturdays, which doesn't go over well in the medical field, as you have to make yourself available every other week end. Any suggestions?
