Hi, I am a clinical nursing instructor at a local nursing home. The RN for their education/staff development position just left to pursue another position and her position was filled with an LPN. This nurse is responsible for teaching RN'S as well as LPN'S in the facility. I have a concern regarding LPN'S teaching RN'S and I was wondering if this is being done in other facilities. I would appreciate hearing from others regarding this.

Thank you VickieRN for all the good info and helpful tips. I am a new nurse educator and wish I would have found your site before I started last Sept. I still find myself learning new ways to teach and strategize. I agree with you on limiting handouts. I have found that if you give them too much they expect to have all their answers to their questions adressed in the handouts and do not research to their fullest potential. I also understand that a nurse educator can get burned out if they dont learn to limit themselves. When I first began, I encouraged students to visit me on breaks and call me at home with questions and since I teach all day and have no scheduled office hours I found that I was getting exhausted and had little time for my family or grading papers. I am learning how to juggle things now. Thank you for the great advice!

Hi, I am a new nurse educator and I am finding it a rewarding profession. I began my nursing career 20 years ago after completing a 3 year diploma program. I started working in a pediatric departement with cross-training into NICU, ICU and ER. I then moved on to home health nursing in a rural area. I completed my BSN, pediatric certification, nursing management certificate and school nursing certificate while employed full-time in home health and decided to move on to teaching. I am currently working as a full-time instructor in both theory and clinical areas while working on my MSN. I really enjoy teaching and I find it very rewarding when a student comes into my office and states "you really helped me to understand that". I plan to graduate from my MSN program in 2 years and then would like to puruse a Phd.
