  1. I was reading about calgary and it seems that the city is booming and the house prices as well as the rent have significantly gone up. I just applied my work permit to the Canadian embassy here in the UK, and looking at going to Calgary by November. My family will be joining me in January, and now I am a bit anxious if I will be able to afford the rent for a 2-3 bedroom accomodation. I will be starting at a graduate nurse rate since I still be taking the CRNE in February. Is there anybody from Calgary who can give me advise if a graduate nurse salary would be able to afford the rent there? How expensive the city is nowadays in terms of utility bills, food, tranporation, etc.? Would be gald if someone can give me some info. Thanks.
  2. I am soon be going and working in Alberta, and am planning to take my family with me. I will be going with a temporary work permit and hopefully will apply for a permanent residence. I got 2 children and my eldest will be 6 in July (he's already in school here in the UK). Anybody out there who knows if my child will receive free education when we get there? If I have to pay for his education (because I'm still not a Canadian resident/immigrant), how much will it cost me? Anyone share the same situation?
  3. If I were you, forget Toronto becuse there is any employer there who hires foreign nurses. If you applied already with CNO, just take the CRNE and once you pass it, you can transfer your papers to other province like BC where there are so many employer's hiring foreign nurses. My friend is in BC now who originally passed her CRNE in Ontario. She tried to apply in Toronto after but for some reason, nobody was interested. And she was an experienced ICU nurse in the UK. So went to BC instead. Sorry but this is the reality. Hope you'll be lucky enough to find an employer.
  4. I wont advise you to apply for registration in Alberta unless you have the financial capacity. What I mean is, as a non Canadian nurse, they will still ask you to complete a competence assessment (another fee) that could last for a week (travel and accomodation) another expenses. Apart from paying the registration fee, these are the things you have to consider funding. I recently applied in Alberta and my verifications were completed only to be held unless I complete this competence assessment. I live and work in the UK so completing this requirement could be very difficult for me. I advise that you apply to another jurisdiction like BC, or Toronto if you dont want to waste your time and money.
  5. I'm a registered nurse in the UK for 6 years and had recently applied for registration in Alberta. All my verifications have been completed recently only to be held unless I complete a competence assessment in Calgary. It seems that with the shortage of nurses there, your board of nursing is making it more difficult for foreign nurses to work there. Is taking and passing the CRNE not enough to practise nursing there? I have a bachelor's degree and more than 14 years experience as a registered nurse and I think this requirement is very insulting to all foreign nurses who wish to be registered there. It's ok if someone live near Alberta like the US but for European nurses would cost a fortune just to be eligible to take the CRNE. It was very frustrating and very disappointing as well as a waste of time of waiting, and money as well.
