ER RN and Pregnant
I hope there is someone in my situation or know someone who has or anyone who has any info regarding this. I'm an ER RN with less than a year background, where I knew it wasn't for me at the time. Now, I love it at the ER! I've been there for almost three months and in two weeks, I'll be off preceptorship. Well anyways, this is my first pregnancy, now six weeks. I'm just stuck right now about this: I was told to prevent lifting, decreasing stress, and not to care for pts who have chickenpox. --You know, some charge RN's don't know either about what pt's I should stay away from! In regards to Cancer pts: when having radiation the day of admission to the ER, I can't care for -----but gosh, how can you tell or get that info when you know it's kind of difficult to get that info- like for example, the pt is confused or the pt can't answer or when the family doesn't quite know. And another example, when I had a pt with decreased LOC for a couple of days, and then with me most of the day, he was totally with it neuro wise and towards the end of my shift, he was suspected maybe to have meningitis--which made me freak out for my baby growing. Then luckily later, it was most likely a subdural hematoma. I really do not want to make this too long to read for now. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say and ask. So I guess the main question is what things should be aware of or stay away from other than what I've said above, please correct me if I'm wrong too. -Thanks in advance.

Z-Coil Shoes
Will they work with wide feet? How about the cords, will they get in the way?

Z-Coil Shoes

Z-Coil Shoes
Hi everyone. I'm considering these shoes since I get pain on my feet, legs and lower back. Dansko shoes was alright but now, they really hurt. I've read some info regarding these Z-Coil shoes and I'm pretty interested and also I talked with another nurse, who likes them. I want to know what style is preferable on the floor (since standing and walking all shift) --like freedom 2000, Z-walker, OR taos clog? I have wide feet too, so is it okay with the Z-Coil? Are they also safe in the hospital to wear for work?

Need hope
Hi everyone. I need some advice. I haven't been working for almost 9 months now and have been looking for jobs since May. Has anyone been in this kind of situation? I had an interview about a month ago where they wouldn't hire me because I don't have Med-Surg experience- It was for a Med-Surg dept (I have some Step down-kind of like Telemetry and Peds experience) Applied alot of places in the internet and then going to the Santa Clara Career Fair in a couple of weeks. I wanted to try Med-Surg but since they are looking at the experience I guess I just have to use some of my background for now.

Kaiser
Hi everyone. I have a question regarding Kaiser. Have you heard of a re-entry program for the nurses who haven't worked for a long time? -and then getting a job. In my position, I haven't worked for about 7 months. I just came home from an interview and didn't get the job because of this. Plus since I don't have any medical background. It was a med-surg medical position and they had a training program at the end of the month but it was for new grads only. My experience was Transitional Care and Peds Surgical. I hope I get some feedback.

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome
Thanks everyone. By looking at these responses and your stories it gives me hope and to be positive. I was so so so depressed about it . You know how it feels being a woman and seeing all these pregnant ladies and babies aroun you. I hope you know what I mean. So as of now, my lab results were actually okay and it wasn't so bad. The thing now is I have to lose weight (they say least 10%) and take progesterone for 14 days for three months. Hopefully my periods come back naturally. I did wanted a baby now since my husband and I had our one year wedding anniversary and being together for a total of eight years! When this PCOS was happening I just figured the baby planning can wait a little while. So I joined Jenny Craig. I just started today too. So far I like it since I need that structure and also my doctor recommended to exercise everyday. I'm doing step aerobics class 3x week (45 or one hour) and pilates 4x week (one hour or 20 min). Thanks again and I'm happy that I have people to talk to about this. Esp. knowing how other nurses out there have this diagnosis.

Were you on medications? How long did it take before you found out you were pregnant?

What effects on the mother? So how did you get pregnant, were you on any medications first? and how was it like throughout your pregnancy? --the acne, facial hair and stuff.

Upcoming job interview
Thanks for the reply and extra advice. It's greatly appreciated. Any other pointers? What kind of questions should I ask? I haven't worked since November last year due to family obligations, so it's been awhile.

Upcoming job interview
Hi everyone. I have an upcoming job interview in two weeks and need some advice. Would you wear a light purple skirt suit (knee length when standing) with black undershirt and heels? OR is it better off with a black pant suit?

Finally a member! Need some advice
Yeah, I know what you mean about being stable personally and mentally. I'm working on it. Yes, I'm still seeing a psychiatrist and also my psychologist. Right now I'm taking a therapy class on coping skills and so far it's working out great. Since I have stopped meds, everything is alot better. I just want to be more stronger as a person (like how I was back then before all of this) and to go on with my life. I know once I get used to better coping skills and reaching out to my support network again, I can balance work and personal life. --That is the biggest struggle, which is leaving work at work and not dragging it home. Thanks for the advice everyone!!!!!

Finally a member! Need some advice
Hi everyone. I'm new in this forum. This is my very first time ever joining a forum. I have read a lot of discussions for quite a long long time now and never attempted to sign in. I just looked at similar topics that would help me. Majority of it did though. Well now, I feel ready to share my experience and be a part of this great and supportive forum. I graduated at the end of 2003 and got my RN license and first job in July 2004. I was working at a transitional unit, like a step down unit from ICU. This wasn't my first choice. I had a call from this hospital the day I found out I passed the boards. I thought it would be a good start since they have a good program. My first choice was Peds. I had offers but turned down b/c failed the first time taking the boards. During two to three months in the job, my mother had a stroke and I had to adjust changing shifts. I was precepting in the day and then switched to nights since that's my shift. It was a hard transition because at the same time I experienced panic attacks and would cry a lot before going to work. I was also extending preceptorship because I was so scared to start by myself. I talked to my boss and there was a time where my boss was going to transfer me to a Med-surg floor but never got to it. So then I started taking Prozac and was taking turns with my Aunt with taking care of my mother at home. The depression got worse, family intervened and they took care of my mom and I ended up quitting my job after working for four months. I also realized that the environment wasn't for me b/c I was the youngest one there, a new grad, and there was just no one to talk to at my same level. The next thing was to focus on myself to get better with group therapy and seeing my psychologist and psychiatrist. About four months later, I had a bad reaction to the Prozac and started a new mood stabilizer. I recovered from the bad reaction to Prozac and continued the mood stabilizer. Then I got married and got another job. This time it was Peds and it was the place where I did my senior preceptorship. It was cool because it was day shift that I liked and this was a surgical floor. I actually did better when I was by myself off orientation for almost a month. The crying came back and I was having trouble coping with the stress. I quit the job after a bad shift and I have been regretting it ever since. I tried getting my job back and my manager couldn't do it. Right now it's been almost five months not working and glad to say that I'm not taking any medications anymore. I want to work again but not sure where to go. I thought about Med-surg adults, since that's a good area to start in to increase my skills. The thing that holds me back is lack of motivation and self-confidence. I also have this big fear of trying again. This time I want to work for much much longer than just four months. What do you guys think?
