Hello everyone, I'm currently working full-time as a PCT at a hospital while attending school full-time in an ADN/RN program. I'm reaching out because I'm at a point where I need to make an important decision about my nursing education and would really value the perspective of current nursing students, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. My current school has pathways that align well with my long-term goals, but the cost of the RN program has become difficult for me to manage. Even with financial aid and my employer's education assistance program, I am still unable to comfortably afford the upcoming fall semester. My school also offers an LPN program that would be fully covered through my employer's education benefits. From there, I would have the option to immediately continue into an LPN-to-BSN pathway at the same school. Based on the current timeline, completing the LPN-to-BSN pathway would take approximately the same amount of time as completing my current RN pathway. My long-term goal is ultimately to become an FNP and develop additional education in women's health/OBGYN and holistic or integrative medicine. I am also interested in eventually working in areas such as IV therapy, aesthetics, wellness education, and community-based wellness initiatives. I understand that these goals will require additional education, clinical experience, and adherence to scope-of-practice and state regulations, so I'm not expecting to accomplish everything immediately. One of my concerns is that my current employer has openly told me that if I choose the LPN route, there is a possibility that I may not be eligible for or hired into certain positions within the organization afterward. I've received mixed opinions from nurses I work with regarding whether taking the LPN route would be a good decision. At the same time, I'm trying to look at this from a broader perspective. I'm 22, have no children, and I'm not in a rush to advance simply for the sake of having a particular title. I would actually like the opportunity to gain meaningful clinical experience and develop as a nurse rather than feeling pressured to reach the RN level as quickly as possible. I also know myself well enough to recognize that I don't want to remain in a PCT position for several years simply because I'm afraid to take a different path. I started at my current hospital as a phlebotomist with IV certification, and I've continued progressing within healthcare. If choosing the LPN pathway meant eventually leaving my current organization and building my nursing career somewhere else, I'm open to that. There are many hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings where I could potentially grow as an LPN while continuing my education. My biggest priority right now is making a decision that supports both my financial and personal well-being while still moving me toward my long-term goals. I don't want to sacrifice my health and stability for a degree that I can continue building upon later. For those who have experience with nursing school, LPN-to-BSN programs, or transitioning from PCT/LPN/RN roles, I would really appreciate your perspective: Would you consider LPN → BSN a reasonable pathway in my situation? Do you think gaining experience as an LPN before becoming an RN could be beneficial? Would you prioritize staying with an employer that may limit your opportunities after choosing the LPN route, or would you be comfortable building your nursing career elsewhere? Are there any disadvantages to the LPN → BSN route that I may not be considering? If you were in my position, what factors would you prioritize before making this decision? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have actually taken a nontraditional or longer nursing pathway and how it affected their career development.
