Management Dynamics
I opted for a combination of respectfully requesting guidance coupled with shades of this is *** up and I'm not playing along with it.

Right?! I shouldn't have been surprised but I was! I sat on that call for 20 minutes waiting for them. But honestly, their poor behavior is to my benefit.

Trust me, we are ALL amazed. There's arrogance there, for sure. Who would want to run a department in which they have zero experience? And yes, good advice about the BCC! I had read that somewhere online and did it, but wouldn't have thought of it otherwise.

Much like you, in my earlier years, I tolerated management bullies because I was new and didn't understand that I could respectfully fight back. Also like you, I really like most of my coworkers. Most days, because there are always exceptions, I feel like I'm working with my friends and that's a good feeling. But you're right, it's sad when the bad outweighs the good, and although it's imperative to speak up, it's unlikely that I'm going to change management or the system. That's when you leave because, as you said, the damage to our health is not worth it.

I have met my spirit animal in you???. This response made me laugh out loud and open my laptop to send an email at the same time. My manager is the director of our ED, although she has neither ED nor managerial experience. We're 0/2 and everyone's losing. Good question about her relationship with the doctor and higher-ups. I don't believe she's related in any way to any of them. But we don't think anyone else wanted the job so she's a warm body. I suspect she makes less money because of her inexperience and ain't nobody love saving money more than a for-profit hospital. I don't think she's inherently a bad person, but her lies, boundary issues, and unprofessionalism are making my life unnecessarily stressful and I won't have it. As for the EM doc, involving himself in nursing related processes is an inappropriate overreach. Unfortunately, this facility is the equivalent of inmates running the asylum.

OMG, I'm The Patron Saint of Being Disliked by Bad Managers. I pretty much get along with everyone wherever I work, but I'm not capable of letting unethical or unfair treatment go... And it doesn't even have to be about me. Inept management really doesn't like employees who stand up to them, but I'm not changing. It makes life harder a lot of times but at least I know I'm doing the right thing. Or at least trying to.

HA! No, I didn't reach out to HR until AFTER they no-showed for the meeting. As if everything wasn't red-flaggy and unprofessional already. There was no apology. My manager texted later to reschedule the meeting for next week - again not acknowledging my request for context/topic so that I can prepare. I was so damn stressed that I got shingles (my manager was aware) but I still showed up for the meeting they didn't even have the courtesy to tell me they cancelled. What is a reasonable wait time to hear back from HR before you reach out a second time to follow up?

They did. If I hadn't reached out to my manager, neither of them would've said a word.

I continue to be baffled by the irony of a meeting so shrouded in secrecy and attended by an EM doc, while I continue to precept new nurses and work my shifts. No mention otherwise of issues with my practice, performance, etc. Meanwhile, I logged on for said meeting virtually and neither my manager nor the doctor showed. When I reached out after waiting for over 20 minutes, my manager said that they'd canceled the meeting early that morning. Never bothered to tell me or cancel the meeting in Teams smh.

Yes!! I'm sorry you also experienced this. It adds so much unnecessary stress to an already stressful environment. All of the research I did regarding HR policies and legal guidance instructed taking notes. There's no other way you can keep everything straight, and documentation is key. Still waiting to hear.

It's actually illegal to record anything without everyone's knowledge. Recording without consent unfortunately would probably get me fired. Correct, and PA is one of those states.

Waiting to hear back. It hasn't been 48 hours yet, so I'm trying to be patient LOL.

I wish we had a union but unfortunately we don't. After a lot of thought though, I contacted HR.

I was wondering about that so thank you for this! I feel like I would like someone with me, given the history and the two of them knowing that I reported them. Without a witness it's their word against mine, and my manager at least has been dishonest in the past.

Thank you so much for this really thoughtful and clear response. It's a relief to hear your perspective because I've been thinking along your lines. When you get blindsided by something like this though, you don't necessarily trust your own judgment. Interestingly enough, the doctor involved has become increasingly involved in nursing processes and procedures and none of the nurses know why... Or find it appropriate. I'm not paranoid and I get along with everyone, but this doc isn't a big fan. I'm scratching my head, as are many other nurses, wondering why a physician is involved in anything nursing related. I've been in this business 20 years and I've never had this kind of an experience or had a physician get involved like this. It just feels very off. I say dynamics in my post because our management dynamics are incredibly dysfunctional. I had to report both this doctor and our manager last year to HR for unprofessional and boundary crossing behavior. HR sided with me 100% so we have that history. Which is why I don't trust either one of them going into this meeting. It's gotten even more dysfunctional since I wrote the original post and I'm considering quietly alerting HR but am not sure that's the right move. Thank you again so much for your input!

Thanks so much. Yes, this is what I thought. It's such a vague and broad term that I have absolutely no idea what it's about. I do know that I have not received any warnings or had any issues that I've been made aware of. And I'm currently preventing new nurses so...

Advice needed: Can someone please define "clinical issues" in the context of a manager scheduling a meeting to discuss "clinical issues " - and including a physician from the department in the meeting. No details were provided and the manager is conveniently on PTO until the morning of the meeting. Additionally, there is a history of inappropriate and unprofessional behavior from the manager, which HR is aware of. I have reached out to my manager and our educator with no response or clarification received. Of course my anxiety kicks in, although I can't think of anything that would warrant a meeting. Any input or advice is much appreciated!
