I am 1st year student
During my first-year placement, I was administering medication to an elderly patient. The medication had been prepared and checked by the nurse in charge. All medicines were initially placed in one pot; however, the nurse then realised that one medication needed to be administered later at 10:00am. She separated this medication into another pot and placed it in the patient's cupboard near the bedside, without locking it. She informed the patient that this medication should be taken at 10:00am.
I was present during this interaction. I confirmed the patient's full name and date of birth before administering the earlier medications. The patient had full capacity and demonstrated good knowledge of her medications. I had been allocated to this bay several times previously and was familiar with the patient.
At 10:00am, the patient reminded me that she had medication due at that time. As the medication had already been prepared and checked by the registered nurse, and it had been kept in the cupboard in front of both of us, I believed it was appropriate to administer it. I did not seek further confirmation from the nurse before giving the medication. was that my mistake huge or it can be reflected as pt has no harm?
