How do you avoid getting your patients info mixed up in your head?
I'm a new grad I've been working for a few weeks under my preceptor, and I take 7 patients on med surg. It's actually pretty doable and almost fun, but I always get my patients mixed up in my head. Every time a doctor asks me a question about my patient I'm flipping through all my papers to figure out how to answer. Sometimes I say the wrong thing to the wrong patient because I got them mixed up. Any tips for me?

What should I (fresh NG) know before starting my job on a surgical heavy unit
It's med surg but very heavy in the surg. I work in an ortho hospital so lots of that and they do a lot of bariatric procedures as well. do any of you experienced nurses have tips for me? Time management or things to look out for I may not have thought of? I will be taking a *** ton of patients so anything will help!!

New Grad seeking advice + reassurance: I will be taking 7 patients on med surg day shift
I will absolutely take what you said into consideration, and as a past aide I know you are 100% correct! Vitals I'm not too worried about but labs and finger sticks and that kind of thing will be tough with 1 or no aides.

New Grad seeking advice + reassurance: I will be taking 7 patients on med surg day shift
Thank you so much for doing the exact opposite of what I was asking in my question! I needed something to make me feel worse and less confident a week before my start date actually so this was super helpful.

New Grad seeking advice + reassurance: I will be taking 7 patients on med surg day shift
This is my first RN job - and I am well aware 7 patients is ridiculous PLEASE do not make me feel worse about this I am aware of the risks. I will be starting on the unit soon, and I am getting more and more nervous to take this heavy patient load. Do any of you guys have experience taking on so many patients or have any tips for me? I don't plan on staying at this hospital for more than a year, and I took the job because it is the hospital system that I wanted, pay is great, location is ideal, and they have a great residency program/preceptorship. With that being said I will have to make due and be the best possible nurse I can be under the circumstances. Please help!
