Thomas Edison State University (TESU) ABSN May 2024 Cohort
Hi, I had all the same questions when I started. People work. They usually end up working less or not at all some terms. (But there are those rare people who work and have a kid and still get it all done. Maybe they don't sleeep; I don't know.) Remote classes are live; attendance is mandatory; and you have to participate in questions they ask. The live lecture program they use tells them when you sign on and if you are present in front of your camera, which has to be on. Your class and clinical schedule is the same for 8 weeks and then changes for the next 8-week term. You don't know your schedule, especialy clinical days until right before the term starts, so flexibility is key. We typically have two, 3-hour classes per week. Sometimes you will have an additional writing class that doesn't have an associated lecture. You will also be in a hospital for clinical at least once a week and you go in for lab days at the Trenton campus on other days on top of that. You have more lab days in the earlier terms because you have a lot of hands on stuff to learn, but they decrease in later terms. It's not easy. When they say accelerated they mean it. Just one class can cover 10 textbook chapters for one lecture, so there is a lot you learn on your own time. If you treat it like a job, it's doable.

Thomas Edison State University (TESU) ABSN May 2024 Cohort
Hi Britt1497, I am in the Fall 2024 cohort. I applied in June, and I heard back within a week or two. I did not have to do an interview. Goodluck! And please feel free to ask anymore questions. I don't know a ton yet, but we have our orientation on Aug 6th and will probably learn a lot then.

Nursing school - Prenursing
Hi Ronisha, I am only starting my accelerated BSN this fall, so I can't speak specifically to nursing school. But I found out I was pregnant when I had just been accepted into a master's program in cell and molecular biology. I had to defer my acceptance and started the program when my daughter was 10 months old. I had an older son who had just turned 3. I made it through the graduate program, but I had to do a lot of going to bed at 2 am and getting up at 6 am kind of stuff for a while because I did my studying after the kids went to bed. My house got really messy, and we ate a lot of frozen meals from Trader Joe's, but I was a good student and a good mom and my husband was OK with it all. I am all for having the baby. But I think you just have to know the answer to some important questions like how would you handle feeding (OK not to 100% breastfeed?), would you be OK being away from your baby to do a 12-hour clinical shift plus the commute,so maybe more like 14 hours? Can you not beat yourself up if the laundry sits for two days unfolded? It's a tough spot because the sooner you do school, the sooner you start making money. My mother-in-law always told me that there is never a great or convenient time to have a kid.

Transitioning into nursing from business
I can see now why you are looking for advice. This is tricky! I am about to start an accelerated programs for non-nursing BA degree holders. For my program, you can start without a 4-year degree... "If you do not have a previous bachelor's degree, you will need to schedule and take the ATI TEAS Exam and submit your official ATI TEAS Exam Score Report. Students should achieve an overall score of 70% or better and scores of 70% or better for all subcategories (https://www.tesu.edu/nursing/programs/bsna/admissions-process)." I am wondering if schools you are considering also have that option. Here's why I bring this up: 1) You will be using time and money to get your finance degree that you don't seem to plan on using - that is, it seems like a stepping stone to an ABSN. 2) Trying to complete your 8 pre-reqs during Winter and Summer sessions will be tough because most of them have an associated lab and take a lot of time. That is to say, it's hard to double-up classes because, for instance, A&P I with lab already feels like two classes. Also, they are just tough classes with a lot of memorization. I have a master's in cell and molecular biology and took A&P II with lab at the beginning of the Summer and was like darn that was hard. I think if I were in your shoes, I would forgo the finance BA and spend the next year focused on pre-reqs and prepping for the ATI TEAS Exam if you have that option. I know it's tough waiting. Once I decided I wanted to do nursing, I wanted to start immediately but had to slug through some pre-reqs and wait for the next admisssion cycle.

pre-requisites BIO and CHE
Hi Nrm2012, I took online science classes with labs from Straighterline. The important thing to do is know where you are applying and asak them from whom they will accept credits from online. The classes I took were challenging, and I have a strong science background. For instance , in A&P II lab they sent me a whole fetal pig to dissect on my own. I have dissected quite a few other animals before, so I was OK, but I remember thining how is a person supposed to do this without any extra instruction? Although, YouTube is amazingly helpful. Always impresssed with what people post to help others.

Help!! Fall 2024 BSN deadline
Hi Princess, Just saw this. Probably too late to apply for fall now. But, I am in NJ and TESU had a July 1st deadline. I think it depends on where you live and what programs are available to you. TESU's next deadline is November 1 for a January 2025 start in their Winter cohort.

Pre-nursing
I second the quizlet approach. By making the flashcards alone you are getting stuff into your brain. I also write things out simply, For instance, I would write the flow of blood through the heart, vena cava ➡️right atrium➡️tricuspid valve➡️right ventricle ... etc. I would do it with help and then keeping doing it until I didn't have to look at anything to help me.

Pre-Req Help! Anatomy vs. A&P
I agree take the lab and the course together! The lab helps you understand the course material so much better.

Nursing school - Prenursing
Is there a BSN program that you can apply to that is hybrid? My program has classes online and then just in-person for labs and clinicals. This might make the schedule a bit easier for you.

Transitioning into nursing from business
Hi Cococutie, Did you have any luck getting into a Fall 2024 program? I found myself in a somewhat similar situation but in NJ. I found an accelerated BSN program that has admissions 3 times a year. I think the key is to have the pre-reqs for the program done. My school had a list on the shorter side ( Anatomy and Physiology 1 with Lab , Anatomy and Physiology 2 with Lab, Microbiology with Lab, Chemistry or Pathophysiology, and Statistics). I am guessing you might need to get some science in and then apply. I talked to the school before I did pre-reqs, and they let me know which places they would accept course credits from, which included some online sources that were relatively cheap. Good luck!
