  1. THey did this at a facility I use to work at. There was ALOT of resistance and a lot of nurses taht had been there a long time left. Advice...Make sure taht the staff is on board with changes, and remember that change is good. couplet care is easier..i think. youare always teaching the mother stuff anyway, and if you know her story and babies story, caring for the 2 of them is better...continuity of care and all:) 4 couplets is a safe #. Any more than taht with taht, with the high turn over of patient s is jsut too much. and patients get cheated out of valuable time with their nurses for teaching and such. nursury is for admitting only and moms and babies room in.

I have a very vast experience for my 9 years...i ahve done it all...but when I float somewhere I dont feel comfortable, I tell them, I dont feel comfortable, but I will "task" which means I will do vitals, get water...etc...they are usually happy to get ANY help, and are usually agreeable to this.
  3. 1. I need to check your hemroids or 2. lets see your perineum during postpartem exam 3. can I watch you nurse your baby (when assessing infant sucking) 4.If you cant pee on your own, I am going to have to put a tube in your member (catheter insertion) I could go on for days!!!! :)

I graduated fresh from high school with my LPN. there was a prerequesite aht if you wnated to specialize, you had to have one year f med surg. At the time, I was very irritated...but after being a nurse for 9 years now (an RN for 5), I am greatful. If you have the basic broad spectrem knowlege that goes a long with med surg, you can do ANYTHING!!! I have since done Peds, PICU, NICU, Newborn nursury, postpartem, home care, and am now pursuing a career in lactation consulting. I think one year minimum is a must for new nurses. you can learn so much!!! good luck:)
