I have only heard success stories from Adult trained nurses as they tend to do a bit of everything anyway where paeds/mental seems really specialised. However, I could be totally wrong, but I've never seen it here or anywhere else.

It's really important that you look on the Florida website and email their board of nursing to get full clarity as things get a bit murky on threads. I emailed the Virginia board of nursing and they quite happily replied and sent links to the national guidance and laws surrounding nursing and visas etc. I would strongly reccomend you go there as your first point of contact. Minimum level of post grad experience seems to be around 1-2 years of experience. While you're still in university, it's a good idea to get spokes in areas of different fields of nursing, as all US states require this, but all to differing levels (again, contact the Florida board of nursing for more clarity! They may not want that many hours) for visas - I have no clue. It seems so hard to be accepted as a foreign nurse that I have not really focused on looking at visas at all but apparently you can apply for a work visa.

How did you get the day with the community nurse? How do you go about asking for those kind of days?

Yeah it's the hours you get on placement. As long as the areas somehow magically aligne (e.g, diabetic adult ward maybe can get a spoke to diabetic children's ward? Since they are related? IDK) I think that's how you can get the hours is being smart with spokes or magically getting A&E. for the board of nursing I'm looking at (Virginia) they want 24 hours in each field. Not a lot but it's getting TO those hours is the issue I'm having. I just wish you could say "I wanna spend two shifts at the children's ward today" but for some reason they won't allow that and it's frustrating ?

From what I've seen, getting an A&E placement/GP practice is the gold standard for getting all your hours in one place. Currently in the process of getting spokes in different areas, the tricky part is justifying it without saying explicitly "it's because I want to dart off!” wondering if you could organise a spoke if it was adjacent to your area, e.g, if you're on a surgery placement, you could ask to go to a children's surgery or a caesarean to get maternity/paeds hours. another goldmine: neonatal units can in some areas, be worked by adult nurses! That would count for neonatal/maternity/paeds hours. Again, it's just justifying to your spoke provider why you want it - still thinking of excuses, if you have any I can try, let me know!

One year sounds doable. What did you do for this year and What's your plan of action going forwards now? Sorry if I'm asking too much

This is fantastic! Did you have to stay in the UK for two years like everywhere says you have to? I really don't want to work in the UK for two years - how was the process like?

We have a lot of independent study hours - you think I could use them? also, with an A&E placement, surely we wouldn't encounter many children as children have their own department in A&E? Did you go straight from graduation to the US?

The board also requires theory hours and I'm not sure how we cover those. We have had a maternity e learning course to complete but most of our course is adult - I think some mental health has been included but no child - so I'm not sure how to get that aspect done

Would these fill the hours? To be transparent I am feeling quite down about this situation. Feels like I'm stuck and no matter what I do I'll never end up in the US after graduating :/

Your university should actually encourage your spokes in different areas. I'm adult nursing and from my reading online, you're allowed to go into different areas but what you can physically do is limited, but you can watch and get your hours done. I'm going to reach out to as many people and departments as possible.

I'm having issues because my particular area is very full of students so I'm going to try my hardest to get spokes in the Summer but I don't know how successful I will be. I think the areas would be mental health maternity and children's. The board I emailed said 24 or more hours in those areas (I'm emailing for more clarity)

I emailed the board of Virginia! A little update, I have emailed my university and I'm having a little roadblock on getting spokes - not that it's not allowed, but the spaces! I'm looking into alternatives In all of these threads people always end up going to DMs and I find it's not helpful to people reading the post! If you have any questions, submit them here so other people can read and maybe answer if I can't! :D
