  1. Hello Ashatan, I have not really worked as a travelling nurse but have seriously considered it before. And trust me, I did ask them almost everything. By the time i was ready to sign up, the permanent job i wanted popped up anyway (go figure). To answer your question.....Yes, you can work as a travel nurse without actually travelling far (e.g. out of state, etc). Agencies can find you a contract for a specific hospital around your area. It can run from 3-6 months, or you may extend every time your term ends by a month, i think. You also have a choice of getting your rent paid by them on a different check from them (like you are really travelling) or you can just have it rolled into your salary altogether. BTW, I believe you also have an option to obtain health insurance w/ most agencies now. You should consider this option while waiting for a permanent position you really want. Hope this helps. Good luck.
  2. I am pretty new in the field. When I graduated, I knew I wanted OR, but decided to get some basic experience at medsurg. I now have one year medsurg experience, currently unemployed & like most of us, is having a hard time getting a job. Since I am searching for a job right now, I figured might as well go for what I really want now. I am currently looking to get into OR, but it's very difficult to find facilities that have OR training programs or are willing to train. Most OR openings require OR experiences (surprise, surprise!) My question is that how am I supposed to get an OR experience if I'm not given the chance to even get in OR? If I can help it, I really would like to avoid going back into medsurg & end up leaving eventually because I know I really want OR. Does anyone know any NJ or NY hospitals that have OR training program or are willing to train? I will really appreciate any info or advice on this. Thanks.
  3. I'm a student nurse & hopefully will be done in school by end of this year. I'm thinking of moving to Houston, TX. Can anyone please tell me what the average salary is over there? Thanks.
