I am a middle school nurse. I have a student who has type 1 diabetes and carries insulin. The student has a history of suicidal ideation with increasing suicidality recently.
I've received conflicting information/opinions from my lead nurse and school counselor. My lead nurse thinks the student needs to carry their own insulin because he needs access to it and would need access in the case of emergency evacuation or a situation like that.
The school counselor is scared because of the real potential that insulin has for killing someone.
Where do you think the line is here? Obviously safety is my biggest concern but also implementing the least restrictive action. Maybe they should keep their insulin in my office on a short term basis and we will continue to evaluate?
