Confronting CNAs
At many assisted nursing/ nursing home facilities in Florida, the nurses aides are in charge not management. Management threatens to fire the lazy ones who are always on their cell phones. For example, I keep doing write-ups as the only nurse and nothing happens. These totally useless ones keep their job no matter what. The other staff sees that "nothing" happens to the bad ones. So even the good ones start "slacking off" because no one gets in trouble.

New director is saying we don't get paid for taking "required classes" at the assisted living facility?
I work at an assisted living facility. In the past, we were always paid for taking these required classes that the assisted living facility said we had to do. However, now we have a new Executive Director. This new one says we have to do all of these required classes. However, she said NO. We will not be getting paid for taking these "required classes". So how is it at your facility? If you take their required classes do you get paid or not? Thanks.

Jails without correctional officers walking with you?
I went on a "jail tour" awhile back when I applied for a "jail job". The nursing supervisor and I went on the tour by ourselves. I rarely saw any correctional officers. She said everyone is being watched by "cameras". I don't know. It made me uncomfortable. We passed a "few inmates" on our tour. So is this the "new normal" now?

Back problems-unable to do heavy lifting
Yes. At this place, anything goes. The only requirement is that they have a pulse in order to be admitted. We get 3 person assist residents all the time. We get residents who need to be in either a hospice or a nursing home. If they have the money, they are admitted. That's all that matters at this place. Fill the beds and get the money.

Back problems-unable to do heavy lifting
- New DON
Exactly. The staff know they won't get fired because they are already short staffed so they will continue to "do nothing" and there are no consequences for them. There are certain staff members who are totally selfish and self-centered and have no business working in nursing. But alas, you will always find these kind of people in assisted and LTC. The nurses are not "charging" because the CNA's are not going to listen to them. The CNA's know they can "do nothing" and get away with it. I use to try to be a "charge nurse" and reported all of my concerns to management. Did nursing management ever do anything about my concerns? Of course, not.- Back problems-unable to do heavy lifting
I am an elderly LPN -assisted living who can do most of the usual nursing duties such as giving meds, charting, incident reports, calling the doctors etc etc etc. However, the new inexperienced management team now wants all of us nurses to also work the floor and we are assigned our own group of residents to care for too. Some of the assisted living residents are very heavy and the other staff members get angry when I ask for help. We are not allowed to have Hoover lifts or anything like that because it is an assisted living facility. So if I get my doctor to fill out paperwork saying I shouldn't be doing any heavy lifting will I then be set up to be fired for not being able to do heavy lifting? Thanks for any comments or advice.- Questions about working as an agency nurse in a correctional job
I have a bad back. Lots of nursing experience-LPN. The job I have now(assisted living)is telling us nurses that we are going to be assigned to our own residents in addition to being the pill nurse. Some of our residents are very heavy and dead weight and really shouldn't be in an assisted living facility. I wish I had a good back but I don't. I am thinking that if I work as an agency nurse as a "correctional pill nurse" that I won't be required to do "heavy lifting" as I am assuming the correctional officers will do the "heavy lifting" for me. Am I correct? Or will I be expected to do "heavy lifting" and also be the "correctional pill nurse". I am also interested in learning what it is like to be a correctional pill nurse. Thanks for any suggestions and advice. - New DON
