  1. Thank you so much for the advice. I really appreciate your tips and will work on implementing them. I especially like your tip of creating neutral emotions around work - I tend to take things personally, so this advice is very helpful. Thanks so much ?
  2. Thank you so much for the kind words. I think telling myself that I won't see these people outside of my job will help a lot. I know I need to separate work life from home life to keep myself sane! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment ?
  3. I'm just feeling really down on myself and like I'm a bad nurse. I dealt with a grumpy patient who was a nurse at a different facility. Therefore, since I'm a new grad I couldn't really hide much of my inexperience because she knew what was going on. She had to use the bathroom as she has urge incontinence, but her roommate was in the bathroom. Thinking that she was going to go right that minute and she would be very upset if she urinated on her clothing (she was about to be discharged), I grabbed the closest thing to me - the wash basin. She grabbed it, yelled "this isn't a bedpan!" And threw it across the room. Luckily another nurse brought me a fracture bedpan after that. Then the pt asked me how long I'd been a nurse and if I'd ever seen a bedpan before. To be honest, in the moment I just reacted and grabbed the first thing I could think of. The patient already intimidated me and I didn't want her get more upset by not being able to hold it and urinate on herself. It was very embarrassing and I now feel incredibly stupid and like I'm an incompetent nurse. I know I need to develop thick skin, but I guess I'm just looking for tips on how to not think about it over and over and how to stop these feelings of inadequacy.
  4. Hi everyone! I received a call to interview for the trauma med/surg unit at the beginning of August. I also received a link to fill out my references - have others received a call for an interview and then immediately were sent the link to fill in references? I was talking with someone who was offered a spot in July and she said that she received the survey at a different time, so I just want to check. And if anyone has any advice on interview Qs that would be super helpful! I'm so excited and really want this position. Thanks!!
  5. Hi everyone, I applied for a new grad program and my acquaintance gave me the email of a nurse manager of a unit for the hospital. I emailed the NM back in April and she responded almost immediately and said she would look out for my application. The application progress progressed, and so I recently sent a second email (about 2 weeks ago) to reintroduce myself and remind the NM of who I was. I haven't heard back yet, so I was wondering if it would be appropriate to reach out again? I connected the new email to the old email thread so the NM could look back on our previous conversation. I don't want to be too pushy so I'm not sure what to do next or if I should just leave it alone. Thanks in advance!
  6. Congrats!! How did you find that out - did your status change on the portal to something different from "routed further for consideration", or did the department contact you directly?
  7. Hi everyone, my application also changed to "routed for further consideration". Does this mean units are considering whether they want to schedule an interview? Does anyone know if we will be either contacted or will the application status change to "denied" or something if they don't call us for an interview after this?
  8. Hi everyone, I just graduated this Spring from a school in Northern CA and am waiting to take the NCLEX. In the meantime, I have been researching hospitals that hire new grads in my area. I've just become very worried because I feel like I have no connections to help me get a job, and I know how important networking and connections are in the nursing field. My senior preceptor has worked at the same hospital for 30 years and unfortunately that hospital doesn't hire new grads, so she isn't much help in the networking arena. I also feel like I didn't develop that great of relationships with my faculty because we were off campus for the majority of my program due to Covid, so it was difficult to make strong connections. I did have one connection who gave me the name and email of a nurse manager; I emailed her and told her that I was applying to that hospital's new grad program. She said that HR will look at the applications but she'll keep an eye out for my name, but HR might not even send my application to her department. I know these sound like excuses, but I'm not sure where to start in making connections and eventually finding someone who can help me get my foot in the door to a hospital. Therefore, any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
  9. Hi everyone, I am very overwhelmed with my ICU preceptorship. I have had a few shifts on the floor so far, but today was my first day taking a patient and doing pretty much all the care/charting myself. I have been doing pediatric and obstetric clinicals for the past year so I am trying to be understanding with myself, but I am very overwhelmed. My nurse has been a nurse for 30 years and is the veteran on the floor; while she has a ton of knowledge, I feel stupid asking her simple questions that I feel like I should know the answer to, but have just been off the floor for so long that I don't remember how to do. I am also struggling with getting everything done while charting everything at the same time. What if I make a mistake or miss something important for my patient, like a lab draw or med administration, because I am so busy? My nurse expects me to be able to keep up with all that demand, but I am just feeling very overwhelmed and running around constantly. Any advice would be appreciated.
  10. Hi everyone, I'm currently working on the UC Davis new grad RN residency program application. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting my cover letter/resume to stand out and get past the ATI screening system? I know to include keywords, but I never know how many to use or how else to make it stand out. Any other tips would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
  11. Thank you for your advice and kind words. I appreciate it greatly!
  12. Hi everyone, I just received my preceptorship placement and found out I am at a Kaiser hospital in the Sacramento area of Northern California. I am disappointed because I have heard that Northern California Kaiser hospitals do not hire new grads; I was wondering if anyone else has heard this? I'm trying to be upbeat and grateful that I even got a preceptorship as I know people last year did not because of Covid, but it's hard when my classmates are being placed in hospitals where they will at least make connections and have a chance of being hired post-graduation. I just need some uplifting advice as I'm pretty down right now. Thanks!

  14. Hi everyone, I am in my last semester of nursing school and I am worried about not being able to find a job after graduating. I've heard it can take 6 month to 1 year to find an RN position after graduating (which I've accepted), but I'm just worried because other students in my class have extern positions or nurse assistant positions at hospitals currently, while I don't have any healthcare experience beyond volunteering and my clinical experience. I live in a pretty remote area with limited medical access, so it makes it difficult to find any kind of work (not just healthcare work) without driving about 100 miles per day (I don't mean to sound like I'm making excuses, I definitely should have been more proactive). As it's my last semester, my time is pretty taken up by preceptorship and classes already. I figured it anything, I can work as a CNA post-graduating while I am applying for jobs. Has anyone found it much more difficult to find an acute-care job (preferably in a hospital) as an RN in CA with no previous healthcare experience? I will be graduating with my BSN in May. Thanks in advance!
  15. Hi, I will be graduating in May 2021 and am starting my hunt for new grad RN programs in NorCal. I am struggling to navigate the websites of the various hospitals just to find out if they even have new grad programs. Does anyone have any advice? I am looking around Sacramento and the Bay Area. I know the big 4 in Sacramento are UC Davis, Sutter, Kaiser, and Dignity Health. I know Kaiser doesn't hire new grads and I found UCD's requirements, but does anyone have advice on how to find the dates for Sutter, Dignity, and the Bay Area hospitals? Or do I just have to spend hours scanning websites (LOL)? Thanks!
