I’m also waitlisted. It seems like your chances of acceptance increases if you apply a second time or third time. Have you applied to other programs?

Yes, I read all of the information in the brochure. I was referring to the lottery specifically. Has the college shared information about what kind of lottery is used for the selection process? I’m assuming that they’re using some kind of online data base, however, I was just looking for specifics.

Hey, I’m not the OP, but I do agree with much of what you’re saying. My comment was in reference to SMU nurses I’ve worked with throughout the Bay Area. They’ve all told me they felt less qualified than their peers. I have a few applications out and my hope is to be offended admissions to a much cheaper option. Good luck to you!

I’ve heard this before. I work in healthcare and ALL of the nurses that are SMU grads tell me to choose a different option. Thank you for sharing your experience. Good luck with the rest of your journey.

I was told this at the 2019 Nursing Success Seminar, which is one reason why I want to attend SMU. I’ve met and worked with several SMU alumni, all from very different backgrounds, none of which identified as “perfect” students. Congratulations and good luck on your journey.

It’s in social work. As a medical social worker, I work very closely with nurses and doctors, so I’m surprised that ADN programs don’t offer more points for this work experience. Especially since Social worker to nurse is a common transition.

I think so, with the exception of ABSN programs. For instance, many ADN programs offer as many as 15 pt for those with MA/LVN/CNA backgrounds, and additional points for verifiable work experience. My Master’s is only worth 5 extra points.

SFSU as well. I was considering apply to a few ADN programs but I doubt I’ll get in because I don’t have past medical experience.

I think it depends on the campus. An admissions coordinator told me that Oakland is the most competitive campus to get into, and that the Oakland waitlist is less predictable than the WL for other campuses. Overall, SMU’s admissions process seems to be a toss up.

No worries! I think it’s best that I stay realistic about this process.

Hi, try using the articulation tool on the website(if you haven’t already), it was really helpful for me. I completed my pre reqs at the Peralta CC’s and took a course entitled Interpersonal Communication.

I wonder how many apps were submitted this time. I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were once again very high.

Understandable! My first attempt scores were all over the place. I scored almost perfect in the Reading and English language sections, really well in the math section (a surprise to me), and completely bombed in science (an even bigger shocker). I think I was tired and rushed through the science part because I took it again and scored in the 90s! Because SMU only has a “recommended” TEAS minimum and not a “required” minimum, final admit scores vary a bit.

I should have added that they’ll have access to the scores if you indicated SMU as a score card recipient. Still, they’re only interested in your highest attempt. BTW, your original scores were really good/competitive, but I understand wanting to improve.

SMU has access to all TEAS score but they only use your highest overall scores.

Peralta Community Colleges in the Bay Area offers this course online and doesn't require a prerequisite.

Same. SFSU is actually my first choice, but I have very little hope that I'll get in. CSU nursing schools in general are insanely competitive. As for volunteer experience, I've worked in healthcare for the past 3 years, and worked in community based services before then. Hopefully that'll help my chances.
