The area is not safe. I have family who has lived in Stockton forever. I’d suggest one of the cities surrounding Stockton or search for very nice neighborhoods in Stockton. We live in Tracy but Manteca, Lathrop, and Lodi are all nicer areas and within 25 minutes of campus. Best of luck looking!
