Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2020
Do you mind PM’ing me where? And also it may be hard to get in a hospital, but definitely FAR from impossible. Maybe not in the Houston area, but many hospitals are in urgent need and will take whoever with a sign on bonus. I feel like do whatever makes you happy whether It be hospital or LTC.

Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2020
When I spoke to her directly she told me she didn’t care if we had a couple months of experience (even as an RN!) because she understands the effects of covid & that we can’t remain unemployed. If anything it sounded like she preferred it LOL. I guess it means less people bugging her in her inbox. But again, this is what she told me, hopefully she was correct.

Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2020
HCA is updating us this week, & while you’re waiting to test I wouldn’t give up hope. She did recommend me to just work where I live, get the 1 year experience, then move because people are always hiring for experienced nurses. Only downside is I won’t get the residency experience. In the meantime I’m gonna look around for other jobs & if I don’t hear from HCA by mid August I’m just gonna stay in my hometown. Sucks, but I’d like to believe everything happens for a reason.

Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2020
I know that they prefer new grads with no experience, however I came to her with the same concerns. She told me that she wouldn’t mind if I started working and had a month or two of experience before they contacted me back because she knows the situation with everything going on. Personally if I don’t here anything by August 1st I’m going to just start working somewhere else.. & yes due to all the hectic hospital issues everywhere I’m thinking of a nursing home too. @Tx29 Good question. You don’t need to apply again. I asked her this too. It’s hard to explain but the application you put out is all they will consider. There’s still Summer grads that out of fairness still need to considered. She said if they wanted to they’ll circle back to past applicants, but this isn’t something you get based off sending in multiple applications, especially if you interviewed already. Yes they’re short staffed, however they’re short staffed on experienced nurses, not new nurses. It’s messed up, I know. I guess we got unlucky graduating this year. Disclaimer: Don’t lose any hope just yet you guys. They are STILL hiring new grads it’s just taking longer with limited openings

Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2020
I have an HCA update I spoke with the recruiter for about 10 minutes (honestly surprised she answered), this post may be a little scattered because she wasn’t clear, but I’m gonna post what I know. 1. They now have 1200 total applications. They opened even more so now they’re trying to consider August graduates, plus Spring so that’s a lot of people to go through. However, the people that interviewed on the 3rd have a better chance. 2. Every hospital is different, but right now everything is awful in general. The OR, elective surgeries, and different units are shutting down due to COVID, so instead of laying off those nurses, they’re moving them to fill in other units. This is causing less space to bring in new nurses. She also feels like it’s a sticky situation to bring in so many new grads with everything going on. It’ll just be a lot to walk into. 3. Apparently there are like 54 new grads from the February/March cohort that’s been accepted but still haven’t even been placed. 4. She said she will send out an update email next week 5. I asked when we can hear about acceptance. She said it could be a week from now, a month from now, or even maybe even longer depending on the hospital. But she will keep us updated & keep in touch with everything. It’s just a lot going on right now 6. For out of state folks, as of right now they are not offering relocation assistance. Also she noted that she feels like it’ll be better if you worked in your hometown, get that 1 year experience then apply as a regular nurse there. She said you’ll have a better chance at doing that than coming in as a new grad. Pretty much don’t put all your eggs in 1 basket. I think I covered everything? In conclusion it’s a mess, a lot of applicants, no one is sure of anything due to covid, and it can take anywhere between another week to a month or so to get an official offer. Pardon any typos.

So are they taking in even more new grads? Because that’ll be the only reason behind opening more applications. And since it says late Summer, it’s sounding like it may be until September until some of us may even start. Nonetheless, they should’ve had this figured out way before. It’s going to be August before we hear anything at this rate.

Thanks for that info! From the vibes I was getting it seems like they really needed people at that location, but I don’t want to jinx anything of course. If they’re planning on starting late July/early august then they HAVE to let people know within the next week at least. Especially for people out of state. This is too short of a notice, I understand Covid & everything but they had since March to prepare for this.
