  1. Congrats to all who got interviews, I Just got an interview for FNP! Anyone else applying to the MSN aka already an experienced nurse??!
  2. I agree, other problem NYU is one of the only acute NP options in new york besides pace, which costs the same, or columbia, which can only be attending full time DNP. thank you for reply! would a primary or FNP be able to work in an outpatient specialty clinic or is that really restricted to primary care only
  3. Hi all, Nurse looking for some advice here. I've been a nurse little under 2 years (medsurg/medical stepdown) and just transitioned to CT stepdown w some ICU crosstraining (basically, soft CTICU cases). Both at Top 10 US hospitals in NYC. I've wanted to become a provider since before nursing school but liked the route of nursing and gaining some experience/ exposure. I plan to go part-time starting next Summer/fall so by the end ill have about 5 yrs of nursing experience. Before nursing school, I was an EMT in a major city for 3 years and then 3.5 years as an ER Tech in a trauma center before and during school. When I went into nursing I was so sure I wanted to be only an ER nurse or ICU nurse, and do critical care for life. I think this time I've spent as a tech/nurse + being in NYC epicenter doing 5 moths of covid only patients, including shock induction into a little bit of ICU during that, has dulled this passion for me (which is sad). But honestly, I am a little sick of doing nights and holidays and really like the idea of working outpatient one day especially when I have a family. BUT I just don't really want to do family practice/general medicine outpatient. I would MUCH rather work as an outpatient cardiac NP for example (as this is my current nursing specialty it makes sense and I enjoy this). I am still a little worried about being bored outpatient, but I cannot see myself working in the hospital for the rest of my life, and I think the outpatient provider is much more interesting than outpatient nurse. I am accepted into NYU's AGACNP program starting this Spring but it's SO EXPENSIVE even with tuition assistance. other programs in NY for primary or FNP such as hunter or stony brook I can attend basically for free if I go part-time. I graduated w 4.0 from nyu nursing undergrad so I am hoping I won't have much issue getting into programs, but I know those less expensive options can be very popular and thus hard to get into. I am currently leaning towards applying to those programs and getting a primary care/FNP. short version: If I want to work in an outpatient specialty office/clinic (likely cardiac, but open to others), outpatient surgical center, urgent care, etc - what NP degree should I get- is it OK to do primary care NP or FNP for this? Is it worth it to pay like 60-80k more at a fancy school to be an acute NP? Can I do ANYTHING in hospital as a FNP or primary (like, one of those IR suites or noninvasive cardiac areas) THANK YOU WISE NPS ?
  4. Hi! Little unrelated does anyone know of discounted parking garage near NYP Cornell? Or where nurses park usually? I heard nights u can find street a lot but for day shift I’m trying to find a reasonable parking option! Thank you!!
  5. I’ve been working nights (12s) for last 10 months. My hosptial is a big city hosptial, pays well, w coveted jobs and hard to get into, so I expected to work nights, and I don’t want to leave system. Many people I started with who are on other units have gotten to day shift by now but I really have no end in sight with my unit situation. I also want to transfer units after I hit one year, and of course be back to bottom of barrel on nights again. My constant tiredness on days off and always pushing myself to awake for at least some of a normal day is making me depressed. At first for a few months I really had no issues with nights. I never have a problem sleeping before my shift or during the day after a shift, and I don’t feel tired at work. I actually feel the most rested days I work bc I sleep a full 7-8 hours. My problems is my days off I feel like I am jet lagged all the time. My SO, who I live with, is a normal 9-5 job and I miss them all the time being gone at work. I want to be awake when they are on my days off. My main problem is no matter how tired I am, if I go to bed at night- even late ish like 1-3 am on days off- I CANNOT sleep for more than 3-4 hours. If I go to bed at midnight, I’m up at 4 am and I can’t sleep again even tho I am still tired. I’m then a zombie until 1 pm and I nap again. I’m still tired after that. I can’t get more than 4 hour chunks (often less) of sleep on my days off and it’s killing me. No energy to do things in between. And what good is being awake at 6 am on a Saturday? I have never been good at falling asleep quickly or taking naps. I sometimes take melatonin days I work but I don’t want to have to always take it to sleep through a night ....but maybe I just should always be taking Benadryl or a sleep aid so I can switch over and get >4 hrs? Any advice on switching back and forth to be able to do some normal people things ? I have to work nights again bc I want to transfer - want more critical care for my career goals as NP in future. But I legit want to take a boring outpatient job rn bc I can’t enjoy the days off and feel like work is controlling everything. Also worried abt my lack of sleep effect on my health ?
