  1. I also am an old timer in LTC for 22 years. I have learned alot and continue to learn something new all the time. I feel like this is where I am supposed to be because I love older people, even though they are not old, I love them too. I think it takes a special nurse to work in LTC just like a special nurse to work in a hosp. setting. I tried that for 2 days and found out it wasn't for me. I don't mind learning from someone new just so they show respect and have a good attitude. I don't like know it alls. Because we are all still learning each day. May you see and learn from us oldies without a problem. Good luck in all you do!
  2. Hi, That's what I've come to the conclusion of that God has another plan for me. I'm from GA too! God Bless You!!

Hi, Happy New Year!! Do you have a hoyer lift where you work? They are very useful and can prevent you from injuring your back or risk hurting a patient with a fall. If they don't have a lift ask them to purchase one for your facility. It is much easier when getting a patient up or returning them to bed. I'm sure someone can instruct you on using it. If nothing else continue to get help, I'm small too so I know what you mean. I have injured my neck and back by trying to lift someone that is too heavy. They will get over it, keep up the good work! Somedays it is very tiring, but rewarding in the long run. Let me know how you do. Bless you!!
  4. Hi to all, Update, the company is still investigating the termination. There have been 7 nurses resign, does that tell you something about the management in this facility. They are backstabbing, gossipping low down people. They are not there because they care, they are there for the $$$. The patient who asked me to type the letter cannot write or feed himself. The other nurse who resigned because management would not do anything about the so called harrassment by her "spervisor". She had reported it on several occasions. The company is also doing an investigation for her and several other reports involving this facility. Thanks to everyone who has been kind and supportive about my job loss, I really appreciate your understanding. Have a wonderful week!!
  5. Thanks Whiskeygirl for your support. I really appreciate someone who tries to understand instead of digging and finding fault for everything. Bless you!!
  6. This was a friend of mine also the petition was for. I was supporting the petition and I did pay a high price for it. That is the reason I typed it, I also signed it. The managers treated her terrible. I have empathy for people, I guess that's why I am a nurse. The patient is getting a lawyer for me. That's your opionion, I believe in freedom of speech for me and the patient. Thanks for your input!!
  7. Hi, Just want to get some feedback on losing my job. I worked in a nursing home for over 4 years. A patient asked me could I type, I said yes, he wanted me to type a petition to get another nurse back that had left or resigned her job due to continual harrassment from her supervisor. Her supervisor also is an LPN. The supervisor is black, the other nurse is white. The nurse who left had reported the other nurse several times and received no help about the harrassment. Anyway, I typed the petition off duty what he asked me to type. I gave it to him the next morning and he went around the facility all day and got over 50 signatures from other patients, staff, and family members to try to get this nurse back. The nurse was very good, lots of experience, very caring, and honest. A couple days later another LPN supervisor called me at home and said I needed to come in to a meeting to discuss what went on over the weekend. She said the company wanted it done today. When I got there, four nurses were in the room and asked me what happenned and I told them as I told you above. The DON gave me a termination paper stating I had caused a great disruption in the homelike environment and helped circulate the petition and typed it. I did type it, I did not circulate it or cause a diruption. They are the ones who caused a disruption. They want to keep this nurse, get rid of the older nurses and hire new people for her to boss. I usually get along with everyone and all the patients love me and I love them. This has really hurt me alot. Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done about this kind of treatment? I have reported it to the main office and they are doing an investigation. The Dept of Labor stated it is their company and they can do whatever they want. Now I have no job, no insurance for typing a petition to help someone else. Life doesnt seem fair sometimes. Thanks for any help you can offer.
  8. Hi, I have been an LPN for 22 years mainly working in long term care. Nursing Homes and skilled nursing facilites. I worked 6 mo. at a Dr. office. I worked 2 days in a hospital. I really enjoy working with the elderly. It is a very rewarding job. You are not to old to go into nursing. If it is something you want to do, you will do good. It was very interesting to me in school, learning about the human body. I enjoyed it so much, I made all A's because it was something I wanted to do. Go after your dreams. I am 48 yrs old and am now studying for my RN degree at home through a directed study system from LPN to RN program. I really enjoyed office nursing also. I got pregnant and the Dr. left, so I was layed off my job. Office did not pay as well as nursing home nursing. Go for it, it sounds like you would make a great nurse!!!

What I look for in good work from CNA'S are they do their required care of the patients. AM care, mouth care, turning and drying as needed and every 2 hrs., making sure their call lights are in reach, feeding or prompting them to eat as needed. Get their vital signs as assigned. Documentation daily on your patients is very important, if not documented it was not done. Notify charge nurse of any unusual finding of the patient, such as skin tears, falls, frequent cough, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, not eating, crying, anything not ordinary. You will get more the hang of it and better at everything the longer you do it. You will also get faster and less nervous about your work. God bless you for your care.
  10. Try working in a nursing home. It gives a lot of experience and is very rewarding.
