Peds heme onc case manager
Does anyone work as a Peds heme onc case manager? I currently work in an outpatient clinic with a mix of heme onc and other specialties, doing infusions, transfusions among other things. Due to a lot of general unhappiness in the clinic where I work I’m looking into a peds heme onc , RN position. It basically involves triaging phone calls, helping set up treatment calendars dealing with prior authorizations and answering family questions. I think it might offer a lot of connection with the families, and probably a lot of flexibility. I’m worried I’ll miss the one on one patient care which I love, it’s very satisfying, but I’m burnt out with dealing with childish issues of other staff members in a very small work environment. I’m looking to retire in maybe 10 years, so this could be a good fit for me for a while. Does anyone have any input?

direction of my career
Hi, I'm hoping that many of you with lots of varied experience could give me some advice. I work part time in a NICU 24 hours. I have been an RN for 5 years and have PICU and pediatric home care experience. I have a bachelors degree. I am looking to drop my hours at the hospital to 18 per week and would like to find work from home for about 12-15 hours per week. I am probably going to take a legal nursing course in the fall. I have considered case management, but have no experience. I have considered telephone triage positions which is in the realm of possibility but also has its own challenges. Ideally, I'd like to review charts in some capacity, on my own schedule from home. Should I try insurance companies (I've looked into a few without luck)? Any suggestions, ideas or thoughts would be most welcome. I've done extensive internet research and haven't had a great amount of luck. What I really need is someone with experience in this area to talk to. I am in New York State so if anyone is geographically close to Rochester that would be a bonus. Thanks for your time, Jennifer- NY RN

Nurses eat their young?!
Any thoughts on this concept? I am especially interested in nurses who have a lot of experience. I work in a place where the mean seniority is approximately 10-15 years. There are many 20 year or more people on staff. I have 5 years of nursing experience, 2 on this unit (part time). I am conscientious and not lazy. I also care about the well being of my patients. There are a lot of wonderful people where I work. I also notice that often, instead of very experienced nurses sharing their knowledge in a kind way and helping younger nurses grow, they tend to criticize and be very harsh towards many moderately experienced or inexperienced nurses. I am not the only person who feels this way. There are many of us. One person put it "I just come here, do my job to the best of my ability, and go home" It can be frustrating to feel good about your nights work going into report, and feel like crap when it is time to go home. Any thoughts, advice or insight?

telephone triage position
Hi all, I would love some insight from those of you who might have some on this topic. I am interviewing for a tele triage postition next week. It is a pediatric position which is the area I have experience in. In this position I could do 50% of my hours from home. I anticipate a certain amount of challenges with this situation in exchange for the flexibility of working from home. I have 5 kids so I think that I would have to set up a quiet work area where they would not have access to, to make calls quietly and privately. I also think that I will miss my job a lot. I am currently in the NICU. I will probably stay there about 8-12 hours a month. On the upside, I think that it would be great to be home more, even if I was taking calls for most of the time I was home. I wonder if I would have time to do quick things between calls like check homework, serve dinner, throw in a load of wash etc... I suppose that would depend on how busy the shift was. It is usually busier in the winter illness months. In the spring/ summer I think that there is more down time and people take holidays/vac etc...another plus. I also would be working for the same hospital that I have been at for several years, which is a huge plus. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, things to consider? Jennifer
