  1. It really depends on what your passion is and your life goals. I have my LVT licence and was an active LVT for 10 years. I loved my job at some hospitals and hated it at others. Which could be try for most careers. I found that I was really happy in a hospital that the vet knew how to utilize a tech. Many DVMs only let me do dental cleanings, rads and check ins. LVTs can do so much more and it was frustrating to be limited by a DVMs misconceptions. The hospital I was utilized the most I was very happy at I did CE with the staff, client education, surgical assisting etc. I left to stay home with my kids. Now that I have been home for a while I want to help my husband with some of the financial responsibility and am going back for RN. I will not go back for the low pay of being an LVT. In my hcola my pay was maxed out at $20 in a hospital. It has been a few years and I hear the pay is still the same. So the low growth opportunity is a deciding factor for me. I have found that I miss the medicine and the caring aspect and am excited to get back into health care. I did love working with the animals but I needed to evaluate my long term goals.
  2. The. PT programs around here at 10 quarters but I am going to an info meeting on Aug 7th to see if financial aid will cover that. I know when I got my AAS as a Vet Tech I had to have full time credits. So that will be one of my questions for them. My husband and I have traded off working from the start. He works on construction and we met in 2008 so he was home with the kids for a few years. In the time it takes for me to finish school he will be ready to cut back hours due to a bad shoulder. I am aware that being a nurse is a hard job and I dont want to dismiss that when I say that I have worked and homeschooled the kids. If we absolutely needed to put them in traditional school, we would. Their education would not be neglected.
  3. Thank you veryone for your replies. There are actually 3 part time RN programs in my area that I will be applying too. I can do my pre-reqs online/hybrid at a close by college. I have taken most of them already but have to redo the sciences because it has been over 7 years. I am aware that I am looking way into the future with this question but it would be a waste of my time to go through all the schooling just to find out I would have to work only weekdays. As far as schooling goes for the kids we are pretty flexible for our schedule. I am also open to using an online program if we needed to for my first year of working if we needed it. There are many options as long as I am not working 5 days a week. Also at some point my husband will cut back to working part time and would be able to be a part of school on my work days. I do see that working a true 20hr PT position would be unlikely at first but I am encouraged to see that nights/weekends are likely. Thanks again.
  4. Thank you everyone for the input. This is exactly what I needed to know. I am open to working 3 10 or 12s. We are on a 4 day school schedule and I have worked/schooled before but I know starting a new career is always a challenge. I understand when starting out working less than 25-30 hours is not ideal. I will keep that in mind.
  5. I am considering going back to school for nursing. Currently I am a SAHM of 5 kids and homeschooling 3 of them. I previously was a Licenced Vet Tech and miss being in medicine/patient care. My dilemma is that I do not want to go full time as my husband and I still want the kids to continue with homeschooling. As a new grad looking at a hospital is it reasonable to hope for a night/weekend part time position or are these harder to come by as they have higher pay with the shift differential? Thank for any input
