  1. I just started at BCBS as a case manager. I have 7 years hospital experience and this is my first case management job. We had 3 weeks of training and then I Had to call my first member on Friday. This member had already agreed to case management so I wasn't cold calling like I normally would be doing. however, I did pretty bad in my opinion on the first call. The first call is an assessment to enroll and identify their needs. We ask them about ADLS, exercise, diet meds, functional status, cultural needs, history, etc. Then we also do a little bit of teaching. I said "um" a lot when speaking to the member. The conversation did not flow smoothly like I should have. I had a cheat sheet on what to ask but i still felt very scatter brained. It didn't help that i was in a room with 3 other people that are being trained, and my preceptor. Then they were all looking at me. Can anyone give tips for these kind of calls? I know the 2nd call will be better because i know what the member wants to talk about and i can assess how she is learning and dealing with the new diagnoses she has. It was very very stressful. I hope this is normal and it will get better!!
  2. I have an interview scheduled for a home health/visiting nurse position for an Independent living community. They made it seem like the schedule is flexible and we see the residents based on their meal times. I was kind of excited until I heard pay per visit. Does anyone know if this is good or bad? Does anyone have experience with this? What is a good pay per visit rate? I asked the recruiter if it would be enough work to be considered full time. There is a $2,500 sign on bonus. Any insight anyone could give me would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! Right now i'm a little desperate for work. I left my full time position in the hospital for a nurse consultant position and ended up getting fired a month later because they didn't want to train me or allow me to ask them questions.

  4. I just got off the phone with the person who interviewed me. Meridian senior living is company that they contract with. Protocols team used to be nurses that work directly with meridian. In 2013 the nurses wanted to start their own company and named company. Assisted living doesn't require licensed staff. Nurses go in monitor, audit, and do chart review. Team of nurses are experts in clinical area and are a resource for rules and regulations. 4 of the nurses started this company but still doing the same thing. Currently in a ransition period, and are being paid by meridian.
  5. Nope I am already assigned facilities across the state to visit. The main facilities would be ni the area I live but there could be overnight travel and other facilities to visit across the state. I believe they said something about visiting the facilities 2-3 times a year. I will be working with a team of nurses and doing the audits.
  6. i interviewed for a job at this company called "protocols of quality care". For this job I would Contract with a company that owns and manages assisted living facilties. I would go into assigned facilties and monitor, audit, check for any noncompliance with rules and regulations. I would manage my own time, report to senior associate. 3 days a week in the field, 2 office days at home. The job title would be regional nurse consultant and it is a full time permanent position. However, I've tried googlling this company and haven't really found much information. It seems like it would be a very small amount of people doing this. It did bring up 4 linkedin profiles, including one of the people i interviewed with. How do i know that this a real job and not a scam? The lady did say that the company had changed names recently and that she had been doing this for 5 years. by doing this i believe she means working as a nurse consultant. Also, what is th typical salary for this type of position? They asked for my requirement and I said $55,000 and i realize now I should have asked for more I think.
  7. Does anyone on here work for Genex doing workers comp case management? I have an interivew with them on Friday and I've read mixed reviews online. It would be a work from home position but I'd be going to the doctor's office with the patients. What is the workload like? And what are the pros and cons? Is Genex a good company to work for?
  8. I am a RN with 7 years of hospital experience. I graduated in Feb with my BSN. I've applied and interviewed at a few research companies. Most companies say that I do not have the skills they are looking for. However, I have quite a few friends who are nurses who were able to get into the field of research (clinical research associate, and clinical research coordinator), with just hospital based nursing experience. One of them was a few years ago and one was this year. It seems like there are no entry level positions out there. There are tons of level 1 and level 2 positions available though. What exactly are potential employers looking for? Do they want certification? Or an associate degree in research?

  10. I have a job interview tomorrow for a case management position dealing with workers comp. Can someone give me some insight on this? I was told that I will go to dr appointments with people and act as a liason between insurance company and attorney, and will coordinate medical care due to injury. The position is workers comp focus and goal is to get them to a functional level and return to work. The position requires someone to be good with computers which I am and able to use ipad (yes). They said the hours vary and it's busy and demanding. I would go to 2-3 appointments a day and then work from home to document, or could document right away if I wanted too. All information would need to be documented in 24 hours. I'm a nurse with 7 years experience in the hospital and I'm looking to advance my career somehow because I hate hospital nursing. Does anyone work in this field and can tell me good/bad things? Thanks!

I'm a nurse with 6 and a half years of hospital experience. My cover letter is a mess, I don't even want to go there.   12. This is the one question that always stumps me on job interviews! I've been a bedside nurse for 6 and a half years and I want to get out of the hospital. I'm looking into ambulatory care, home health, and case management. They always ask me why I want to leave the current position. I never know what to say! Can someone give any ideas? I knowit would be unnaceptable to say my new boss is awful, I am way too stressed, the patient's families are becoming increasingly demanding and rude, and that the direct admissions we get int he hospital are train wrecks that need to be in the ICU.
  13. I have a job intervivew for an episodic care manager position with a local insurance company. I don't have any case management experience but I do have a BSN and 6.5 years of hospital nursing under my belt. Can someone give me more information about this kind of job? I'm assuming it's like case managerment. I'm not really sure what the difference between care manager vs. case manager is. The person who contacted me about the interview said "it is initially to begin as a 4-6 month contract with full intension to convert perm should the opportunity be a right fit for both parties but the hiring manager would be able to discuss more in-depth during an interview". I'm very nervous about leaving full time hospital position at a job I hate for a temporary position. But it would be nice to get the experience and it does sound like there is some potential for a permanent position.
  14. What are some of the topics we can use? I know the paper lists that we can use patient centered care models, mandatory immunizations, human trafficking, gun control, and mandatory continuing education for nurses,etc. How in the world would we relate gun control to a nursing project? Maybe I'm just confused! So I wanted to see some of the topics others have used in the past or have thought of. Some of the ones I was thinking was bedside report, implementation of electronic health records, medication scanning. I can't really think of anymore. This project has me beyond stumped
  15. So I don't really have any experience with case management but it is something I would like to try. I have 6 years nursing experience in telemetry, med/surg, and float pool -all in a hospital setting. I have an interview on Wednesday about a case management position and I wanted to see if this sounds like a doable case management load or if it is too much for one nurse? I would be the case management nurse for a retirement community and in charge of 40 patients. It's a salary position but I haven't found out what that is yet. Half of hte members would be my personal patients, but I would also need to be familiar with the other half. There would be 2 case management RN's there from 8-5. Now here's the part I'm not liking so much- I would be on call for 2 weeks straight then 2 weeks off. So basically overnight and weekends I would have to be available on the phone for telephone triage for the CNA's if a patient is not responding or they have questions. I would not be required to go into the facility but I would advise them what to do - press the emergency button in the person's room. I would get $700 a week plus my regular salary to do this. So $1400 every other two weeks. They said that there may be a chance that a person's med container gets spileld and I would have to go in an refill it but that rarely happens. This would be a 25 min drive for me so I would not like to be doing this at 3am. This makes me wonder... who gives the medications? CNAs? Or it seems more like the members? So can someone who is familiar with case management give me some insight? Is this a terrible job with too much responsibility? Or is it a reasonable case load even with the on call? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  16. I've been looking for a change in my nursing career. I have 6 years of experience in med/surg, float pool, and cardiac/intermediate care. I wanted to give OR nursing a try. Is it really ALL standing for 12 hours? I sometimes get heel pain when working on the floor. I"ve used inserts and bought really comfortable shoes which help for the most part. I think I read somewhere that the circulating nurse does not stand as much as the scrub nurse. DO you rotate these positions? ANy information would be greatly appreciated. I just am tired of floor nursing, dealing with family members, and the stress. It's very hard to deal with all the direct admissions we get and not having an admission nurse/team.
  17. You would probably be better off posting a question like this on the city-data forums. I found much more valuable information on there. I've only been here for 3 years so I'm not much help. I worked for a year in the float pool at Duke Hospital. Then I moved to Rex Hospital and have been here for 2 years on an intermediate care cardiac floor. Do you have your Bachelor's? Most hospitals around here will not hire a nurse without their bachelor's. Or else you must sign papers that you will obtain the degree within 2 years.
  18. A lot of Rex positions are filled internally. They were on a hiring freeze up until about March or April of this year. They are a magnet hospital and the employees tend to advance from regular floors to ICU or ER from what I've seen .
  19. Last fall my manager came to me and asked if I"d like to get involved in the Epics integration into our hospital. The job was very vague and she did not know much about it. All she could tell me was that it would start in February and would be for 2 years. Also that I would not be doing floor nursing for 2 years but would still have a position when I returned. I knew the job would be M-Fri but not sure of hte hours or how far of a drive it would be. I had been an RN for 6 years. At that time I still had a year and a half left for my BSN. Right now I'm really kicking myself for not taking this position. I know that school is important but this experience would have been unique and would have offered me informatics experience that is invaluable. I've heard that many nurses who did this ended up just working in nursing informatics and not going back to hospital nursing. I would love to do nursing informatics but I do not think I could handle another 3-4 years of school for my masters. Is there any other ways to get into nursing informatics? Any ways to get more involved in the Epic integration? Or is it required to have your MSN before any job will even consider hiring a nurse?
  20. I've been working as an RN in the hospital for 6 years and I'm pretty burnt out. Someone had mentioned that I might enjoy case management. I've tried looking on indeed.com, and simplyhired.com but I cannot find many jobs. Most of the jobs I find seem like they are either short term such as 6-9 months, or they are with a company that is not directly affiliated in my state. I am interested in case management outside of a hospital setting. I know someone who works at some drug safety alliance group and does case management such as writing reports. I've been trying to find a job like this but I'm not really sure where to look. I am merely an acquiantance to this person so I can't really ask her. I have 5 months left of school and I will have my BSN. Can someone point me in the right direction? And can someone tell me more about case management. Thanks!
  21. So I'm going to be taking the last nursing class for my BSN in January 2014. I am currently living in NC. DOes anyone know what the graduation requirements are? Should I start doing some of the work now? Do I actually have to physically walk accross the stage to get my degree in my hands? I"m really clueless about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   22. My DARS says that I need a humanities and literature credit still. Is there another class that people have been taking online other than Phil1300 (intro to ethics)?
  23. When I look at the Western Oklahoma university website and click on online classes, then go to spring classes (4 wk) - I don't see music or philosophy available in any of the semesters. That makes me a litlte nervous to have to wait until April to find out if those classes will be available in the summer.
  24. How long are the classes that are not the 10 day intersession? I tried looking up the music or ethics class. I found the music class being listed as in the summer but it doesn't give me dates for when it beings and ends. What kind of work do you have to do for the non 10 day intersession classes? Specifically the ethics or music class? I want to be able to enjoy my summer adn not be bombarded with school work and stressed out! Is there discussion boards each week? Tests? Projects?
