Advice for changing my major. Leaving nursing?
Thank you Carrie I feel for your friend working in CPS. It seems to be the hardest on people. Nursing seems so versatile, that's why I keep going back to it. Thank you!

Advice for changing my major. Leaving nursing?
You feel better now? You really showed me there buddy. "Undesirables" is what other people refer to the population SW work with when I tell them I want to be a SW. Same as people saying SW is fine but you'll have to "pay your dues" by working with poor people. I was the undesirables. I was poor people, so get off your soap box. The stereotype has proven to be true that female dominated careers are filled with smug brats. I'll enjoy my "leather chaise" now, please lmao.

Losing sleep over possibly changing my major.
I am glad to hear someone views school like that. So many people have told me nursing school is the hardest thing they have ever done and you truly have to love it or you won't make it through. Some other people have suggested becoming a CNA to better understand what the roles people play in the hospital. Thank you!

I was 2 people away from getting into nursing school. 600ish applications for 60 spots.... I made a B in AP1&2. Just do the best you possibly can. Remember that the majority of people are average, the work you put into it is what sets you apart. You will do great!

Advice for changing my major. Leaving nursing?
Neo solider I understand what you are saying about money which is why I have sat down with a financial advisor. All of these fields I am looking into make enough money for me otherwise I wouldn't be looking into them. I believe in taking care of yourself before others. I said money wasn't my motivation because I would take a job that makes less if it means doing what I love. My deciding factor will never be money unless it's having to live on the streets type poor. I work front desk at a clinic now and I like it a lot. I get to speak to patients and just be someone who listens to them. My coworkers however are the most miserable people. I float between 3 clinics and this is the case everywhere. The Dr. hates it the NP regrets every going into nursing, and the nurses and X-ray techs hate every time a patients walks in the door. I don't know why everyone is so miserable and mean to the patients and each other. I'm hoping the majority of the medical field isn't so glumy. I will definelty look into becoming a CNA to enable myself to see other roles in the hospital. Thank you!

That is a great idea. So CNA or nurse tech would be the path I need to take to open up these opportunities for me?

Thank you so much for the advice Neats!! Thinking about how I like to watch things unfold and how much time I will be spending with either clients or patients opened up a new way of thinking for me too. Thanks!

Advice for changing my major. Leaving nursing?
Thank you both for your advice. Cyc0sys Nursing is hard to give up bc it is so diverse. Of course, with social work I will have to "pay my dues" by working with the population that are seen as less desirable, but that's okay. I'm actually interested in doing that... for a little while. And I know new grads don't jump into private practice. Job descriptions in my area typically look for 1yr of experience to get hired on with a agency that doesn't work with "undeserirables". I would never JUST get a BSW. SW is MSW-LCSW or ending up in your 3rd friends position after years of service. How do your friends like their jobs? And where are their jobs located if you don't mind me asking? Brownbook you didn't really say anything that wasn't money realated. I suppose I should have added I am not money motivated lol. I know what I need to make to have the life I desire in my area, which it is possible with the career choices I am researching. Do you know anything about psych nurse job duties or the setting they usually work in?

Advice for changing my major. Leaving nursing?
Hey everyone, I am applying to NS, but I didn't look at my other options before I dove into this major 100%. The human mind and human behavior interest me way more than any of this pharm, physiology, or bio stuff. I know I want to do something in the "helping field", but I am not particularly excited to begin NS. I have looked at other fields such as social work, management, and counselling... and yes, psych nursing too, my hesitation with that is I will have to make it through NS to get there lol... which I have already mentioned I'm not very excited about since it doesn't seem like anything they study interest me. Since many nurses work side by side with some of these professions (Mgmt, SW, psych nursing, counselors) what can you tell me about what they do? Pros/Cons of the profession? Thank you!

Losing sleep over possibly changing my major.
I am uncertain whether or not I like nursing. I know I definitely won't stick with it if I don't though. That's why I will be taking a semester to explore more. I never once enjoyed AP2. I enjoyed AP1... but for the wrong reasons I suppose. I was good at AP1 & I gained confidence from it, didn't really think what I was learning was interesting though. I have heard other people say the same thing about psych nursing!! Yikes! So say I find I do like nursing but hate what nurses learn in school... do many nursing student dislike their studies but love nursing??

Talk to your advisor bc there is no way for anyone to know how competitive your particular program is. In general you don't want to drop below a 3.5. Bs are fine, but don't get too many. Remember this isn't med school 4.0s aren't the only thing that get in most cases. Good luck to you!

Micro, A&P2, statistics, devel psych
I'm taking AP2, micro, and chem together and I don't regret it a bit. If you have decent math skills stats should be fine. I don't so stats was a big struggle for me.
-
Do you think that taking micro and a&p two together is doable?
I'm taking micro, AP2, and chem together. "It's a good way to show you what NS is going to be like bc you will have to consume yourself with the classes and won't have time for much else" someone once told me. So I took it as a challenge and did it. I'm doing well but now questioning if I want to apply for NS lol. It's not easy but neither is NS so do it.

Losing sleep over possibly changing my major.
Hello everyone, I'm struggling with the decision whether to continue my nursing career. I wanted to be a nurse bc it seemed like an easy choice. Every other female I graduated with was planning on going to NS. My family is in the field, and I took care of someone close to me which gave me a great feeling even though it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I'm questioning whether I want to apply again (didn't get into ASN program). I work in a clinic now with miserable unmotivating coworkers. I took what seemed like all my challenging classing in 1 semester and I am feeling BURNT OUT! I have no desire to learn anything additional about human physiology or biology. It has genuinely become boring to me. I am thinking about studying human behavior (which has always been an interest of mine). Im thinking management, social work, counseling... still wanting to stick to service oriented careers if possible. My parents said I shouldn't be looking at my path to get there, just my end goal... therefore a psych nurse would be a good fit. My question is: if I'm feeling "burnt out" and uninterested in the medical field and my studies ALREADY could I really make it through nursing school, doing my floor experience, THEN be a psych nurse? (If there is another path anyone is aware of please let me know) I was always told NS was something you have to truly want to do and have a passion for therefore you'll hate it and/or fail. I decided to take a semester off to research further, but wanted to see other opinions. Thank you!

Was it a mistake to pursue a nursing career?
Thank you so much. You have really given me a lot to think about. I am in the process of seeking out grief therapy as well as advising for another career option. You are right, nursing will always be there if I decide to go back to it. Social work has come to mind many times. I am nervous but excited to explore what else is out there. Thank you!

Was it a mistake to pursue a nursing career?
Hey everyone, I am currently deciding on whether or not to apply to NS. I will have completed all my BSN prereqs in about 6 weeks and will have to apply in a month. I chose to go to school for nursing after my mom lost her 2.5 year long battle with cancer. I did my share of taking care of her even though I feel guilty I didn't do more. I felt great reward being there for her. It was the absolute hardest thing I have ever had to do but I compartmentalized and emptied her catheter bag, made her doc appts, and took her to and from chemo. Being a "parent" to your own parent at 16 was very challenging. Her oncology nurses inspired me to be like them... so giving and kind. I also decided I wanted to go into nursing because it was a respected field, I could make enough money to support myself, and I could hopefully change the lives of others like the great oncology nurses did for ours. All of my dads family is in the medical field and my mom was a pharm. rep. it just seemed destined for me to go. I was always so sure that's where i was headed. I went straight to school after graduating without a doubt that's what I would be doing for the rest of my life. However, in shadowing nurses in the hospital I have realized that I may not be able to do this. I am having horrible flashbacks of my mom being in the hospital, I'm starting to see her dying again. I'm 20 now. It's been almost 3 years since she's passed. I told my dads family nursing may not be for me and I might as well should have told them I murdered someone... with that being said I have no support in changing majors. I want to do nursing because I don't ever want there to be another 16 year or really anyone feeling like they are alone in grief. I want to do this for the patients so they know someone cares. Is that not a nurses responsibility? Did I just encounter gracious onc. Nurses? Has anyone else experienced emotional trauma with nursing? How did you overcome it? Should I look at other careers, and if so what?

I do not think I will be waiting around BRCC for much longer. I dont see a point in retaking classes when I can take classes for my BSN and get in elsewhere. Feeling a bit discouraged and frustrated, but keeping my head up! Congrats to those who did get accepted!

Hey everyone, my letter states that I am waitlisted. Does anyone have an idea about how many people get pulled from the waitlist. Thank you!
