I am an LPN and i was pretty taken back by the Monkey statement.I have a problem with some of the comments and i accept Jason's apology also. Jason I have a question just for you? Have you ever really researched and LPN's practice and based it against the nurse practice act in your state? Point here is know what we can and can't do by researching it out,okay end of subject above. Now I think the point here is that the grandfathering IDEA was a concept of Something that Might come to pass. It was talked openly as i see in previous posts WAY back into the 70's and it's now 2001 and it has NOT happened. I feel that each level of education teaches skills that are useable to all, I have learned alot from ADN,BSN, and NP, but that does not mean that I would use any of it if it were outside the scope of my practice.The answer is NO. Professional behavior starts with everyone, giving the respect to each other and I really don't understand why we have to have all this trashing-a wise instructor once told me that when you trash one branch you trash the whole tree. This was the scope on the Grandfathering thing.(graduated in 1984). In nursing school we were told that if the ANA were able to eradicate the LPNS they would be able to be grandfathered into an ADN by taking a few additional classes. The RNS were suppose to be broke down into LPN's who were grandfathered and ADN's to become Tech Nurses, the BSN was to be known as the Professional Nurse. The grandfathering would be based on job experience and schooling for the LPN's and we would have to take some type of testing.This was at a time when all the hosptial's were going to all RN staffing and the LPN's were either told to get their RN's or basically find another job-Nursing home, Doctor's office ect.This was a concept that the ANA had been kicking around and many people thought it was going to happen . well 16 years later we are still in healthcare with many options. This poster's D.O.N. was in school when this was being said, talked about openly and it was of possibly things to come if they could eradicate the LPN's. This was only going to be offered to Liscensed nurses, not students. i do remember this because i thought i had wasted my time going threw lpn school when they were going to gradfathering me to another position after i met the requirements of that. But once again it was a Concept to help with the nursing shortage that was present then as is now.

I can really understand what this nurse is going threw. Several years ago(10) my mother in laws boyfriend was placed at my faulity, Man talk about additional stress. Everytime something did not go right or she felt he wasn't getting good care my phone was ringing off the hook at home and at the nursing home. I had the assistant administrator come to me about patient's right of this person and i just very nicely reminded them who had allowed my mother-in-law in on care conferences, pt evals and ect. I also reminded him that he could go home and sleep and not be bothered on a daily bases of what happened, what is going on, new med changes, aide issues ect. These things of course i refused to discuss due to his patient rights but i really feel for this nurse.the only suggestion i have is asked to moved to a different station or if they have a different faulity ask for a transfer. The peace of mind is well-worth it.

Susy- I became an Lpn because I was told my act testing was not high enough for an ADN program. I was going threw a divorce and had a 3 year old to support so i went and got my LPN. i was out in a year and making enough to support us, I have been working on my ADN for years and since i have remarried and now have a 10 and 12 year old running me all over creation the regents program works for me for my completetion of my RN. Most if not all the Rn's i work with are very supportive of the Lpn and let's be real-we are in a nursing shortage would it be wise to get rid of the Lpn's? The Rn's are complaining now of overworked and patient ratio's, manatory overtime ect. I think C.LO has a behind the times idea most hosptials in my area have added the lpn's back into their hiring matrix and found out we are hard to find since the nursing homes and agencies are paying us anywhere from 15-21.00 an hour. I enjoy what i do part-time in our local hospital and by the way we need Lpn's does anyone need a Job??? Come on over and work with us we Love Our LPN's. Suzy there will never be unity in nursing as long as there are organizations and R.N.'s who feel we do not belong in the system. Each level of nursing has it's own pitfalls. Don't be to hard on Iris she is only defending what we all love and that is Nursing. The statement that C.LO made was really just an ANA vision statement because they don't see L.P.N.'s as a part of the healthcare system and after how many years we are still here and still strong. When i graduate from Regent's I will still keep my LpN Liscense active.

Lesliee, I also agree with the other posts.A private meeting may do the trick. I worked at a place where we had someone like that. I left and filed for unemployment and listed hostile work environment for the reason i left. Once my protest hit the faulity needless to say hostile hannah settled down and is leaving the cna's to do their own work now.we had tried with management to stop the behavior but just couldn't seem to get out point across. now the cna's are talking union and i think it may go threw. sometimes there is power in numbers-

Malaika, I will be very honest with you, Nursing is many things but you need to take alook at what people are saying and determine for yourself what works for you. We do not eat our young who are willing to listen and learn from our seasoned nurses.They will take you and mold you into a responsible and knowledgeable Nurse.Do not let the board scare you. everyone on this board if they had a choose would probably still be in Nursing even with it's pitfalls.I enjoy what i do, granted there are days when i am ready to go work at k-mart but usually that's when things are really stressing me out.You need to remember as you go threw school,that your first mentor will begin the molding process let them teach you, pick their brain, and listen and always be respectful to them and you will have the gates of experience and knowledge opened up to you. We are more than willing to give you what you need if you are willing to take it. Good Luck to you

I think as a deaf individual they need someone who they can talk to. Does your client have any oral speak skills? I work with a group of hearing impaired and deaf individuals at church and i know some just sign and some have deveopled oral skills.Most hosptials in my area have a list of certified interepters and some of the deaf will bring their own with them when they come to the hosptials. I believe in all honesty that this is truely a "Hearing" profession. I myself am hear of hearing I have the problem that if there is too much noise i can't hear it's a blur, so i don't work around monitors-it's a heredity thing -my dad had it. I have even checked into the new litmann stethoscope that has the diaphram that is super sensititive so that i can hear lung and bowel sounds better. I am learning sign and will some day communicate that way. The deaf communities could use some one in the community health area that can speak directly to them. Has your client thought about teaching? or counseling? or maybe working at a WIC or speciality clinic that the deaf come to? She would be a great help to both the hearing and the deaf or maybe a headstart program where she could work with deaf children? But i think as far as nursing she is really going to be disappointed.

THANK YOU!!!!! I have asthma and that nasty perfume and cologne will make me your next patient. I don't enjoy coughing my lungs up just because some one forgot that people with resp problems can react to this stuff.The nails are really an issue with me i sure would not want some with long nails giving me a supporitory man who wants a ruptured colon. Then their is the hair issue with all the scented gels and hairsprays did you know someone with asthma will react to that? But to be fair, guys get rid of your smelly stuff too, it's just as bad if not worse with all the musky smelling stuff=bronchospasm heaven. Please also check your hair gels they stink as bad as the ladies do. Thank you for listening to a crabby asthmatic.

I turned a place in for abuse and got black listed it took me 3 years to find another job i even had to leave the area to find work. what a joke, it protects no one but the paper it is written on.

I will be starting regents program in may and to be very honest with you there are more liscensed individuals who are now doing this type of program than the traditional. I would not worry about what other people think. When i figured out the cost and included daycare, wear and tear on my car, books, uniforms, lost wages and all the extra's that pop up, these programs are the same if not cheaper to do. I think it's pretty nice to be able to sit in your own living room and study and not have some crabby instructor breathing down my neck.I do this at my own pace not someone elses and if i am sick or have plans i don't have to worry about what assignment is due in the morning. I feel like I have the control and not a school of nursing who is looking for some way to bounce just because they don't like me or my care plans or whatever. As far as the other nurses who feel you are not as qualified it's their problem because i've seen what's coming out of the traditional programs and even oriented some new BSN and ADN's and my experience and knowledge as a seasoned LPN is much better. I even took a part time job at the area hosptial so that when it came to the practicum i was comfortable with the hospital setting and the skills i needed refreshing i will get with my job. So don't let what other people think keep you from doing what works best for you.
