  1. Okay, thank you so much!!! This really helps.
  2. Thank you for your advice! No, I actually only have one cup of coffee in the morning. I honestly just couldn't think of any other usernames & I love coffee so I put the two together (I'm not really addicted to caffeine). However I think that sometimes I do try to get things done quickly so I'll be sure to slow down & take my time from here on out! Thanks again for your input!
  3. Hello. So I've noticed something about myself that concerns me. I'm an intelligent person, but I can do really stupid things sometimes or just make tiny dumb mistakes. I'm worried that those dumb little mistakes might turn into big ones that will end up causing my future patients harm or just make me as a nurse look incredibly stupid to my coworkers etc. Like I said, I am an above average student, I wouldn't say I'm a genius but I do have a 4.0 and have been in college for 3 years (this is my first year in the nursing program). My clinical instructor gives me good feedback but for some reason I just feel like I never do a good enough job. I don't know if it's because I'm a "perfectionist" or overly critical of myself. I'm also an extrovert but tend to be a little socially awkward sometimes and I get a little anxious if I'm put in a social settings that I'm unfamiliar with or uncomfortable with. I love talking to patients and enjoy clinical but as a student, I'm intimated by the other nurses (who aren't my professors or instructors) and doctors too. I hope I'll grow out of this once I actually become a nurse. Going back to the "dumb" things I do; for example instead of grabbing just the glucometer to get a patient's blood sugar, I grabbed the entire thing including what it was being charged on. The other day I had trouble putting on a blood pressure cuff cause for some reason I couldn't figure out the right direction even though this is my second semester in clinical and I've done it so many times. I felt very embarrassed in front of my patient and the PCA. One time I drove on a ONE WAY STREET and didn't realize until I saw a car coming at me (they were really far away so I had time to stop and turn around) but seriously who does that?? That scares me (I do have a perfect driving record & have never been in an accident though so it's not like I do stuff like this often). However, a couple times a school bus was parked with the "stop" sign on and I guess I wasn't attentive enough to notice so I kept driving and realized I shouldve stopped after I got honked at. Also, just to clarify I'm never under any influence (it's shocking to most people but I have never been drunk in my entire life so it's not like that's the problem) it's just stuff like that, I'm hoping I'll grow out of it. I'm 21 years old so I feel like I'm old enough not to be this dumb!! I know no one is perfect, but I wish I was more confident in myself. In class, I am confident. I understand the lectures, answers questions, and do great at presentations, etc but for some reason in clinical I get so nervous even though I truly love being there and enjoy it. I don't want to change my career so please no one suggest that. I just want to get better at the "skills" and "social" aspect of Nursing rather than just the knowledge. Also all my friends tell me I'm an extroverted person and I even asked two of them for their opinion on this and they told me I don't have a socially awkward personality but I disagree. I don't undertand why I am so self conscious about myself and every little thing I do. If I do something wrong or make a mistake, I think about it for hours on end and how much I hated the fact that I did that. It gets really irritating & I often feel embarrassed about myself in front of others. I just want to improve in this aspect of life before I become an actual RN. How do I stop doing "stupid things" and improve my communication, social and life skills, etc?? Thoughts would be greatly appreciated thank you!!!
  4. yeah I just started in the program this semester
  5. Hi y'all. I was thinking of quitting my current job & becoming a PCA or a tech because I think it would be a great experience for a nursing student. I was wondering if a PCA can work1-2 days a week? I know that's not a lot at all, but I'm a full time student & I'll be taking more courses next semester than the average nursing student so it will take up a lot of my time and my education is my first priority right now. What do you think? Will any hospital hire me? Also what is the normal shift like? 8,10, or 12 hours for a PCA/tech assistant?
  6. Hello all! most of you know I'm a nursing student. Lately, I've been thinking of minoring in Spanish as well. I know it's not necessary, but my professor told us it looks really good on resumes and I am always up for a good challenge. I am required to take 2 foreign languages anyway and for that I am taking Spanish 1&2. in order to be a minor, I would need to take 5 more Spanish classes after that. I was thinking since I have a full course load during the semesters I would take 2 summer Spanish classes this summer, and 2 next summer, then 1 during a semester of my senior year before I graduate. I still need to talk my to advisor, if they do not offer these courses in the summer, I will probably not do it because I couldn't handle having that many classes at a time. However, I am worried because I have never taken upper Spanish level classes in high school before so I'm concerned it will affect my GPA if I do poorly and as you know we need to keep up a certain GPA for scholarships and to stay in the program. Do you think I should take a shot anyway? I am generally a good, hard working student and think I am capable of it, but at the same time I'm just scared that if something happens and I do poorly it will forever screw up my GPA. What do you guys think?
  7. No she never specified we had to interview anyone face to face. Also this was assigned yesterday in class, I worked last night, it's due tomorrow, and I'm nannying all day today so I don't have anyone older I can interact with in the time it was assigned. I have a senior community health project and plenty of older adult assessments to do this semester so I'm not worried about not getting the chance to interact with people of another generation or not getting the opportunity to develop those nursing skills.
  8. Hi, for class I have to ask a person who is not from my generation (I am 22), these two questions: 1). How do you define health? 2). What do you do to maintain your health? I appreciate your answers! also, even if you are from my generation please feel free to answer anyway!
  9. this might be a dumb question...I know you should document pertinent negatives in a pt health history. is it necessary to also document pertinent positives?
  10. I'm a nursing student & I have to do at least 3 presentations this semester, one is a group project. I'm usually good with collecting and gathering research and info for the presentation but when it comes to speaking to the class, I totally freeze. I found that in the past ( in HS and other college classes) I studder ALOT, talk really fast (without realizing at first) and mutter my words. I try to tell myself to calm down and not be nervous and to pretend like I'm presenting the info to one person to help ease my anxiety. However that doesn't work. I get up there with my heart beating out of my chest, sweaty palms, and if I get a negative response from the audience I find myself tearing up sometimes. I'm usually good with criticism in general, but for some reason when it's coming from an entire class or audience at once....it bothers me. Any advice on what I can do to help ease my anxiety or be a better public speaker?
  11. Hi. I'm 22 years old (as of this past August) and just started nursing school. I originally attended college for 2 years, 4 years ago & did prereqs then life happened & I had to take 2 years off from school and here I am. All my high school classmates already graduated undergrad or some are graduating this year I think. I will graduate in approx 3 years from a BSN program. I feel like such a loser. Also all my friends & old classmates are getting married or are engaged. I'm still very single. Should I be worried?
  12. Hello. Can someone explain to me or define passive responses or behavior in nursing? Like a nurse is being passive to someone like her patient or other healthcare workers. Thank you!
