I was in two academic programs @ 2 different schools and working when I had to get my CPR card last year. All the other programs only had a few specific dates for the class and Miami CPR (CPR everyday) was the only place I could find that fit my schedule.

A few students mentioned this option and I completely forgot that we had a portal with all of our records. So easy to access and I don't have to see anyone to get these records.

CPR class for those in the Kendall - Homestead area: I took this class a year ago, but I definitely preferred it to the all day courses that I researched. There is an online, self-paced course component that you complete prior to class, and then the in class component that is an hour long. The CPR card is also printed on the spot and it's an AHA course so there won't be any issues (I'm already compliant for CPR). Overview of AO nursing schedule from a former student: "The first semester is 21 credits. This was split into 2 mini semesters basically. The first half is when you take Fundamentals Of Nursing (Lecture MF). Fundamental clinicals (7-3). Fundamental skills lab (TWR) . Assessment lab (Fridays) and Intro to Pharm (Math) Intro to Pharm and Skills lab was about a month and a half. We were going to class every day. After those classes ended, we had 1 day off (I believe Thursday). Friday was the longest day because Assessment was from 2-5ish? The next half was Med Surg. MS clinical. and Pharm. These classes were 3 months long. 2nd semester: Peds, OB (both 1 month long). These were in the afternoon. 3rd semester: Psych. Advanced Med Surg and Leadership. Basically the first semester, you're taking multiple classes. Once you get to the 2nd and 3rd, you'll be able to focus on 1 subject... so in that sense things get somewhat easier on you."

@Christine2281: Based on your circumstances it seems like you will be able to handle the AO. @LMB79: I know it has been a while since you posted, so I'm not sure if you already made up your mind. Nevertheless, I would speak to an advisor to get a better idea of the class schedules and then compare the two options. My circumstances are similar to @Christine2281 so I didn't even bother applying to the Generic program. However, even with my support system I would have to think twice about the AO with school aged children.

Yeah, I plan on working while I pursue the BSN as well. Ask HR about the BSN requirement. Until recently I worked at Mt. Sinai and my cousin is a preceptor at UM and they have already implemented the BSN requirement.

Many of the major hospitals in South Florida are requiring nurses to obtain the BSN within a certain period of time after employment. Below is an article that suggests that the BSN may become the standard for RNs. The Future of Nursing: BSN by 2020: Current Articles: South Florida Hospital News I also read a nursing survey that states that 70% of the hospitals in the state of Florida hire new BSN grads. So, for job security purposes it's a good idea to obtain a BSN in the immediate future. Not saying we can't get a job with the ASN, but the BSN makes us stronger applicants.

I have a graduate degree yet I'll be starting my ASN in the spring. It really depends on your goals and where you are in life. My initial undergrad grades weren't the best so I couldn't qualify for the local accelerated BSN programs in spite of having a 3.94 prereq gpa & a 93.43% on the Hesi. So, I've decided to attend a very competitive local college for the ASN and attend a major university for my BSN. If I qualified and didn't mind the financial burden then I would definitely go for the ABSN.

My logic was the same as yours but I was fortunate to meet with someone from financial aid who told me to put 2nd year bc the program is an AS program. So, even if this is your 1st year at MDC, this isn't your 1st year in the program. It's assuming that our 1st year was the pre-nursing year and the 2nd year will be the ASN year. I received the same error message as you and jenneraytion, but after correcting #29 & #30 my SAR was finally processed.

Sorry, I've been swamped with school. On the FAFSA you have to select the following: #29. 2nd YR./Sophomore #30. Associate Degree (Occupational or Technical Program) Let me know if that works.

Hey Sean1976, if you look around this site you will see stories of students in their 40s and there is an amazing story by Shibaowner who is like 50 something. I'm normally the oldest in my classes, and I don't spend any time worrying about that. Although, I will admit that most students think I'm their age. Nevertheless, you have to stay focused on your own goals and your age may eventually be an advantage in comparison to some of the younger students who may not be as mature in the workplace. I worked as a sitter in the Rehab Dept when I was completing my pre reqs and I was often approached by nurses and Physical Therapists because they were curious about my education level. I only told a few of them about the BS (not the MS) as I didn't want to field questions or deal with or encounter people who may have been intimidated. Nevertheless, the few (like 3 nurses, 2 PTs, and 1 CNA) that I told were very supportive, encouraging, and even quite informative regarding nursing school info. So just hang in there and remember YOUR priorities. Age may be an issue today but there are plenty of perceived obstacles in life, but many of them only exist if you let them affect you.

@Khaner19, where are you taking Statistics? I'm taking it at IAC as an 8 week class. I'm concerned about the class structure going forward as a result of Irma.
