State institutions/hospitals
My experience has been also in Kentucky. Like Realnursewitch, we had alot of schizophrenics and bipolars but these folks were treated longer term on different units. I worked on an admission unit where we saw everything- lots of dual diagnosis- substance abuse + depression- personality disorders, etc. Staffed really well with mix of state employees and temps. Temps are paid better than some of the new state employees but of course, no benefits. Felons and homeless are placed ASAP if no psych DX. Building is old but beautiful and well maintained. Hope this helps RNoholic.

Offered the ONLY full-time day shift position (actually just told I was taking it)...
As someone who works for the "state", become familiar with Long Term Care Federal Regulations which are available through the CMS (Center for Medicare Services) website. Federal and State guidelines focus on safety, assessment, are care plans followed (turning, repositioning, nail care, oral care, are heels floated, etc.) along with other things that are basically safe and good nursing care. Know your facilities policies or their systems. The surveyors are looking to see that the residents needs (physical and psychosocial) are met. If everyday is survey day, then you won't have to sweat it when the "state" comes in. Good luck and God Bless!

VA experiences
Has anyone in the Tennessee/Kentucky/Indiana area heard anything about a new VA hospital that will be located at what will be the old Gateway Medical Center in Clarksvillle, Tennessee? Gateway is building a new hospital and I have been told VA has plans to move in. I will be retiring from my job in less than 2 years and am interested in VA nursing. Any information about this possible new facility?

Good Bye to Nursing for me...
Congragulations on your pregnancy. Do not, I repeat do not, let your license lapse. Keep up your CEU's. When that baby gets older and begins school, you just might find yourself looking for a nursing job. Maybe a school nurse where your hours would coincide with your child's school hours or a clinic. So sorry you had terrible mentoring. Not everyone has the ability to nurture and teach and encourage which is what a good mentor/preceptor does.

What is your weakness?
Definitely sputum. I can take feces, vomit, urine, blood, bile. Just hearing really productive sputum makes me want to immediately gag.

Have you had a gastric bypass or lap-band procedure?
I had gastric bypass 2 and 1/2 years ago and have had terrific results. The key to a positive outcome is selecting a qualified surgeon whose practice is devoted to bariatric surgery. There is a great website, ObesityHelp - Gastric Bypass, LAP-BAND® System, DS and Other Surgical and Non-Surgical Weight Loss Options., that is a great resource with statistics on surgeons, hospitals, etc. Do your homework to decide if this is the right decision.

Relocating to Fort Campbell, KY
Welcome. I live in Hopkinsville, Ky. which is about 12 miles north of Ft. Campbell. We have Western State Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital, Jennie Stuart Medical Center and Cumberland Hall (private psych. hospital). Western State employees nurses through the state of Ky. and also hires prn through Crown Temp. service. I understand they pay RNs 32.00-35.00 per hour through Crown, no benefits, require minimum of 30 hours a month. Not a bad deal. Good luck in your search.
