Prevent CLABSIs / where is the data?

Hey everyone,

I know of some research students in the Memphis, TN area who are conducting studies and analyzing data based on the frequency of accidental PICC line (or CVC) removal/dislodgement correlated with the adverse affects costs of replacing the lines thus requiring additional, unnecessary care had the patient not removed the line.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any publications / databases (inexpensive but preferably free) to help discover the overall cost due to the event of an accidental IV line removal.

I've been trying to use various keywords in google searches but haven't been very successful. If anyone has any suggestions let me know! There is way too much time and inefficiency costs going to waste due to accidental removals.

Thanks!

I'm confused about what this has to do with CLABSI (Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections)

Well, doing a goggle search for "Central line associated blood stream infections" is much different than doing a search for removal of central lines by patients. What would be your cost? I'd say you need to tally up the charges your organization places on any of the four different types of central line insertions, then the cost of a chest xray, or ECG technology to verify tip placement. Incidentals would be tabulated such as if the one who is doing the insertion does not get it on with the first VP, how many more supplies are being used? Nursing time, radiology time should also be figured.

Sometimes, I've had patient's who really aren't appropriate for IV therapy due to their consistant removal of IV catehters. Then, the cultures/MIC's are assessed to see if it is appropriate to switch to a different medication which can be given via a different route.
