Hi everyone. My name is Kim and I am not only new to the site, but to pre-nursing at CSN in Las Vegas. I was hoping to get some insight on classes from students who have completed these courses. In a couple of weeks I will begin my first semester (fa12) taking my prerequisites and was wondering what the difference is between taking 2 history classes or 1 political science class. In other words, which one is more difficult? Also, I spoke to a counselor and was told that Biol 189 is the hardest class that the college offers and was advised to take Biol 95 first. Has anyone gone that route? Any other insight that anyone can give me would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Me personally I took the 2 History classes online which was much easier for me. Yes Biol 189 is a difficult class but with good study habits and good notes it's possible to pass the class. It cover a lot of things that you must understand before going on to 223 and 224. If you haven't had a science class recently I would suggest taking 95.

I just finished all of my nursing pre-reqs at csn and I have applied for Spring '13. I took Hist 101 & 217 online over the summer and loved them. I actually learned quite a bit and they were easy for me. I took them in the same summer as com 101 & math 100b. From what I hear psc is harder and I'm my interested in the topic so I may have a biased opinion. Bio 189 was by far my hardest class. I had to take it 3 times and it took me almost 3 years to do so because of work and other obligations. Looking back on it, at the time I thought it was silly to take Bio 95 since it wasn't technically a pre-req for 189 and I thought it was a "waste of time" but now I wish I had taken it because my difficulty with 189 set me back so many years in my program. Talk about a waste of time!! So if I were you I would take bio 189, hist 101 & hist 217. Good luck to you :)
Edit: also, in each of the bio 189 classes I took, only about 10-15 out of 40+ students were left in the class on the day of the final. Your counselor is right by saying it is the hardest class. I had a great professor the 3rd time which helped. She was actually in charge of the micro dept and I took her for micro as well. Too bad we can't post names here :)
Thank you SharIn and Christina731 for your input. You both helped out a lot. I plan on taking Biol 189(in-person) along with Hist 217(on-line) in Sp13. I figured with just those 2 classes I should be able focus hard in Biol 189. Also in Fa13 I plan on taking Biol 223 and 224 by themselves. Will it be impossible to do or do I need Biol 223 to understand 224?
No problem. Good luck in your educational endeavors.
As for biol 223 & 224 in the same semester, that is impossible because biol 223 is the pre-req for 224. But you can take biol 223 & 251 (micro) at the same time. Tough but doable (I did it).

I was thinking of doing what you did (taking biol 223 & 251) as an alternative to my original plan. Also, congrats to you for completing these courses.

Hi Christina, I know this post was from a few years ago but I wanted to ask you since you are a CSN Nursing graduate and very informative. I am taking Bio 189 this summer and was wondering if Bio 223 and 251 fills up as fast as 189? If I pass and my grade is posted early enough I am hoping to take these classes in the fall.

All of the biology classes fill up quick. Depending on when your summer class ends, you may get a chance to sign up still.
Quick tip: Watch VERY CLOSELY when students are supposed to pay for their tuition. That first payment usually drops quite a few students out and you'll be able to get in then. But that is usually open for a matter of hours.
PS: I was just accepted in. I completed all of my prereqs in December. It took me 4 semesters to do the prereqs (I took my time).
Okay, will do! Thank you! Congratulations by the way, that's awesome!

Hey guys. I know this is an older post, but I had a couple questions. I am a new student as CSN & I am taking my Pre-Req's for the Nursing program. I am taking Math 120, ENG 100, PSY 101, & SOC 101. Are these classes good starting grounds? Should I replace SOC 101 for BIOL 95 (I have been out of school for 6 years & need a refresher)? Also I plan on working full time while I am completing these classes. Any suggestions or pointers?
