Preparing for nursing school

Published

I am waiting to hear back if I got into nursing school and I want to go ahead and get a jump start on what I can. Are there some topics that can be studied before class starts?

I wouldn't get too far into actual nursing topics.

I usually just say to focus on making sure you have A&P down very well, which will save you some time once you are in the program since you won't need to review it as much, and learning some medical terminology. Even just knowing common medical suffixes, prefixes, and root words can help you learn vocab or figure out words that you haven't encountered before.

Otherwise, maybe get a nursing test taking strategy guide and go through it and/or learn some of the CNA/personal care skills. I haven't used the former, but almost everyone had some difficulty with the way nursing questions are asked in my cohort. So getting used to them now would give you a bit of a head start. And I think CNA skills will help you a bit in clinicals and when you graduate. We had one day in which we went over the skills and it was very brief, so for those that didn't have previous experience, they aren't as comfortable doing bed baths, etc, etc.
