Pre Reqs for Accelerated Nursing programs

Hi,

I received a BA at Brooklyn college so I wasn't required to take those pre reqs they want in those nursing programs. My question is how will I be able to? I am considering LIU, NYU, or Columbia. Which one is easiest to get into? Also, would it be better to just attend a community college if I do not have the pre reqs?

Hi Yesenia,

Nursing programs at community colleges will also have prerequisites. Each school will require different prereqs so you'll have to look at each school's website to figure out which you'll need. As to whether community college or a private school is better there are many pros and cons both ways. I recommend doing a search on all nurses as there are many threads on here with people giving opinions both ways. It depends in part on how much money you want to pay and how soon you want your degree.

As to how to do your prereqs, you can take classes at a school without being enrolled in a degree program and just pay on a per credit basis. Some people do this as a full time student while others do their prereqs part time while working. Many prereqs (generally those without a lab portion) can be done online. Occasionally some schools (for instance NYU) will admit you into nursing school on the condition you take and pass your prereqs the semester before you begin your nursing courses. However, it's generally helpful to have done at least a few prereqs before applying as it helps your application.

Hope this is helpful and good luck with your research!
