Can anyone help me with these two questions?

1. You have been under a lot of stress because of an up coming exam and your glucocorticoids become elevated. What would you expect your levels of CRH and ACTH to be?

b.

ACTH low but CRH high

a.

ACTH and CRH both low

2.Which of the following best illustrates a concentric contraction?

a.

A gymnast lifting one leg up until her foot is above her head

b.

A traveler holding his suitcase along his side as he walks through and airport

ACTH production would decrease and CRF production would increase.

When a muscle is activated and required to lift a load which is less than the maximum tetanic tension it can generate, the muscle begins to shorten. Contractions that permit the muscle to shorten are referred to as concentric contractions. An example of a concentric contraction in the raising of a weight during a bicep curl, or lifting a suitcase while walking.

The professor just told me that the answer for number 1 would be that:

- ACTH and CRH would both be low

I'm officially confused..

How can he/she say they are both low? In response to stress you use ACTH ( adrenocorticotropic hormone) but is is also produced in response to stress, so it would therefore increase, along with corticotropin-releasing hormone or CRH. These both are secreted to increase production and release of corticosteroids to return the body to homeostasis in relation to stress.

I would ask him to clarify the answer and give rationale. Just because they are teaches, don't mean they know it all, if you don't understand why it is that way, have them explain it until you do. That is part of their job!

I think I understand a bit more now.. It's because cortisol production is on a negative feedback system so if cortisol is already high then ACTh and CRH are decreased.
