PICU Application Please help with personal statement!!

Hi

I was just wondering if anyone can help. I am applying for a job in the PICU Dept as I am due to qualify nursing this year. I'm just wondering if anyone can help with the personal statement as I'm a little stuck as I want to relate it to the area, but I've not worked in PICU on my training. I have worked in NICU, which I have enjoyed, but just wondering really if anyone can offer any advice on how to start it.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks Laura

You need to identify why you want to work in PICU before you can draft a personal statement. What do you know about pediatric critical care? It's very different from neonatal critical care so you need to understand those differences. It's a much higher stress area for one thing, because most of these children have been home, have been part of their families, have developed habits, routines and grown into little people and their families are suffering in a different way from the parents in NICU. Another thing is the vast variety of problems you see in PICU compared to NICU. When you could look after an infant with RSV today and a teenaged trauma victim tomorrow, you have to know a lot of stuff! As our header here says, PICU is the broadest scope of nursing there is. So think about what you know, and why you want to do this, then come back and we'll help you sort out how to say it.
