While you are in nursing school do the instructors teach about all the different fields in which nursing has? Ive been looking at the numerous paths one could take as a nurse and am a little overwhelmed. How do you get into a particular specialty? What are you actually qualified to do once you are finished with RN school?

When you're in NS, you have your clinicals in a lot of areas of the hospital. Med-surg, OB, ER, Surgery, Cath lab etc.,etc., When you graduate you are not "specialized" in anything at that point. There are classes you can take post-graduation if you are looking into specializing in one specific area or advance your education. Around here, most nurses end up working in the area they want and finding CEU's in that area of interest. Some of the hospitals around here also offer specific training in certain areas like gero-psych. Hope this helps, Good Luck

We start with basic general nursing (taught via body system - i.e. cardio, respiratory, ortho etc) and take basic classes in mental health and childrens. In third year we can choose two electives for speciality areas - e.g. pedi, critical care, aged care, family health, community care, palliative care, psych etc
