personal statement for school application

Published

Hi there,

Am in the process of applying to nursing school and have to write a personal statement. Anyone have suggestions on what to say, what not to say? They want to know my perceptions of the nursing profession, why I chose it, and oddly I'm not sure how to answer these. Anyone have an idea of what they're looking for? Thanks

I had to do this also. I remember being nervous about what to say, I defiantly did not want to say the wrong thing :chuckle ! I ended writting about an experience I had when I helped someone who was sick and how good it made me feel. Turned out the reason they had us write this was that they gave it back to us at the end of the year along with the statement of "you will face many challenges and will sometimes question why you ever wanted to do this in the first place, put this somewhere safe and pull it out whenever you feel like you need a reminder." I really do not know what happened to it, but I thought it was nice to see it again at the end of the nursing program after I had reached my goal. Best of luck to you!

My school is looking to learn about yourself. Basically, you need to praise yourself and be positive. Why did you choose nursing as opposed another profession? Some people do it for the money and others because they want to help others, what qualities do you possess that qualify as a potential excellent nurse? What do you have that Sussy Sue or Johnny John might not have, that makes you a good candidate. Lastly, what have you done in your lifetime that maybe involves helping and caring for others. Maybe you can sum up the events in your life that have led you to pursue a career in nursing.

Believe me I know that it is difficult sititng there and praising yourself because it just seems a bit odd. If you cannot answer them maybe ask a close friend or relative to tell you what good qualities you possess and maybe aid you in answering any questions. Write ideas down on paper and then just sit down and plot them together into a well written essay with an Introduction, 3 paragraphs and a nice conclusion :)

I think that if you answer these questions in an essay form you have covered everything they want to know and learn about you. Just be confident and put it in writting.

Good Luck,

I have just started working on my application and am mulling over what to put in my personal statement also. I came up with a list of what I might include, my school breaks it down into 2 parts 1) why do you want to be a nurse and 2) what will you do after you receive your degree.

why I want to be a nurse:

-job flexibility, many different areas of practice

-neighbor (NICU nurse 20+ years) who inspired me on this journey

-my cousin is a nurse 30+ years, very successfu career and also very sucessful at integrating her career into her family life

-the NP at my PCP's office is fabulous, I prefer seeing her over any of the docs in that practice (besides my own)

-my son is autistic and we have had tons of contact with medical professionals (many good, some bad)

-frustration in current line of work (customer service, no real way to actaully help people in my current position in a call center, no opportunities to establish relationships with the people I speak with (huge corp., I can count on one hand the number of times I have spoken to the same person twice and I have taken over 40,000 calls)

-serious medical event in my life where I experienced both good and bad bedside nurses

what I will do after I get my degree:

-bedside nurse in pediatrics, eventually would like to become an NP in peds or family practice but who knows, I may change my mind and like another area LOL!

Anyone else have thoughts on what to write about? My school is only looking for 2 or 3 paragraphs so I'm sure I'll have to whittle my own list down considerably. :chuckle

When I wrote mine I added a paragraph on how the schools mission statement fit into my personal goals. I got accepted so I guess it was good that I included it.

Maybe you can find something here (I'm also in the process of applying :) )

I thought I'd share what I wrote. Hopefully it will help to get the creative juices flowing. LOL!! Feel free to use any part that may work for you. Good luck!!

Since high school I have dreamed of being a nurse. I spent the years following graduation establishing my goals and maturing. I have always known that when the time was right, I would return to school to finish my education and obtain a nursing degree. That time is now. I feel I have a calling and a passion for the profession. Having been raised in a household with a physician and a nurse, I was taught early on the value of serving the community through the practice of medicine. I feel there is no other career that has the impact on others' lives like nursing. Not only can one be a part of a patient's treatment plan but can also be an integral part of a team of respected professionals. The diversity of nursing specialties is most appealing because the opportunities afforded to nurses today are unmatched in any other profession. I am eager to enter nursing school to begin my training in both the science and the art of nursing.
