Personal Statement Advice

I currently have a 3.08 cumulative GPA and I am applying to a direct entry MSN program at UTHSC. I will be graduating in August and I am still taking 3 summer courses as of right now. My GPA is low due to low grades my freshman year. 1 month before I moved to school freshman year my best friend died and it was my first time leaving home which is a huge part of why my grades were so poor! In the past 3 years I have made nothing lower than a B in any class! Should I explain this in my personal statement? My fear is that they will think I am making excuses, but the past several years clearly show I am a good student and very dedicated to my work! My GPA is likely to be a 3.1 when I graduate. Do I stand a chance?

Yes you most definitely stand a chance. I'm in the program now and there are many people who got in with a 3.0
