perforated appendix

Well this is my first post here, so be gentle.:D Anyway, I am just entering RN school. I am 41-year-old, so I guess you could refer to me as a "late-bloomer". My son was admitted to the hospital last sunday for a perforated appendix. They have not removed his appendix as of yet, he had an abcess, stayed in the hospital for 4 days, but left the hospital with a drain. He is to see his surgeon Monday and they will discuss at what time to perform his appendectomy. My question is, he is having pain which I was told by his surgeon today, is from his drain, which makes total sense to me. I cannot imagine having a tube coming out of my abdomen would be comfy for me. Home health came this morning and did his WBC count, which is still coming down and he is on antibiotics with no fever. He is taking 2 Percocets around every 6 hours since Wednesday. I guess my question is, is this pain normal and is 2 Percocets every 6 hours too much? I feel like I have driven my son's surgeon absolutely insane with so many questions, so I thought I would post that here. He was on a morphine pump for 2-1/2 days so I am grateful he was feeling better to be able to get off of that. He is feeling much better than he was when he was admitted. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to read this.:redbeathe

Hello,

We welcome you to allnurses.com.

I'm sorry, but we cannot medically advise you in the manner you need about your son's care. Please, continue to speak with his physician/surgeon. He/she is the only one who can properly advise you.

We hope that all goes well for your son and that he gets past this without any further issues.

Good luck with your RN program. We hope you continue to post at allnurses.com and enjoy the site.
