Opinions, Please...

Ok, so I am starting a new adventure in nursing...I think. I have an opportunity to provide childbirth classes to a local health department as a contract position only. During my "interview" I was asked what my salary would be. I am not sure how to answer this because I have never contracted out any childbirth classes before. My question to you guys is...What's the going rate? I am taking my Lamaze certification exam in October, I am an IBCLC (Lactation Consultant) and a RN.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration!

A huge part of the answer to the question depends on where you are located. Salaries vary considerably based on location, as well as demand for your services.

You would be better off researching this in your own community. Contact other facilities that offer child birth education services and ask how much they pay the leaders of the classes and what the instructor's certifications are. You can also investigate the salaries of lactation consultants at your local hospitals. Another option is to decide on a cost-per-class fee for participants and ask for 50% (or more) of each participant's fee. Of course, then your salary is dependant on the number of people who attend your class.
