Hello! I am a new grad ADN. I have been offered a job in corrections.......Im not sure if Im cut out for it. My experience has been working as an LPN in pediatrics. I did do my pregrad 120 hour clinical RN rotation at a prison. I work just fine with the inmates, and I have experience working as a mental health tech in forensic psych. Corrections is not totally a foreign entity for me. I would like to know the reality of prison nursing as an employee, pros and cons. The facility I would be working at is a medical based facility, geared towards inmates with medical needs. They have a hospital, long-term care, emergency care, psych and everything in between. I will be hired in as a 3rd shift float staff-RN. My biggest concern is not using the skills I just spent 2 and half years learning.

You will use your skills and a whole lot more...Prison nursing is a unique specialty. If your heart is not in it, please, don't do it. Those of us who really want to be "prison nurses" have a hard time working with people who use the job as a second income/curiousity seekers, etc. I love what I do, and I look forward to working with true professionals who love what they do too. You just might love it too though...maybe, give it a try and during orientation you'll know if you can handle being a nurse in corrections. Good luck.
Thanks for your response. I will definitely take your advise to heart. As a new grad I want to get the most out of a first time RN position.
