OB Precepting

Have you spoken to your preceptor? She works on the unit and already knows the manager therefore she'll have more insight than what we can provide. When I preceptor students on my unit, I flat out ask them where they would Iike to work after graduation.

Introduce yourself to the manager! The manager lined up my preceptorship in postpartum, and offered me a job halfway through. Unfortunately due to hospital politics, she wasn't able to hire me (long story) once I was licensed, but that was out of her hands. Having an in with the manager (or anyone you possibly can) will help.

Also, start working on your certs. ACLS, NRP, STABLE, AWHONN EFM, maybe PALS. Any lactation courses would help, too.

iPink RN, I have spoken to my preceptor and she is very aware of my intentions. She has been so great, too. She is showing me all she can to help me be ready to be hired. After almost 6 shifts, I am so happy in this area of nursing, I guess I just want to do my best to get my foot in the door.

RunBabyRN (Awesome name btw) you bring up some great ideas with the certifications. Thanks for the hint! The manager isn't around much, but I did get the chance to meet her when some higher-ups were taking a tour and they stopped to speak to me and my preceptor. It was a great chance to be seen. I am also on friendly terms with all the nurses I have come in contact with. They have all been supportive and helpful. I have made every effort to be a part of the team so that if they have a position available, I will be on their list of desired candidates. Thanks again!

Keep doing well on the unit and having an open communication with your preceptor. She could be the key to getting you in. Nice that you met the manager but she really doesn't know you. She knows your preceptor though. ? I don't know what year you're in but if there are openings for techs see if you can get in while you're still in school so you have the foot in the door and then transition into a floor nurse upon passing your NCLEX.

Sorry Run that the position didn't work out for you. I don't know the details of your situation but I've heard many stories about promised positions falling through for students. But I've also heard great success stories. There will always be hospital politics. I myself got hired onto my floor without applying because I knew someone higher up on the food chain. HR realized and asked me to "officially" apply. I've also seen managers give away positions to family friends. Hospital politics won't change, but keep forging ahead and your desirable unit/hospital will be waiting for you.
