Hi! I was just wondering if anyone has been in a situation like this, or what they think. 2 years ago I started an LPN program, I was doing great but I dropped right before clinicals because I was too afraid that I wouldn't be able to physically do it. See, I have had problems with muscle strength in my legs, I can walk fine and stand for long periods, the only real physical problem is that I can not life very heavy objects from the ground or squat (because I can't get back up), at the time I didn't let anyone know about my problem because I was embarresed. I have been seeing specialists and so far the only thing they have found is that My vitamin D was pretty much non existant, so they have me on pills to replenish it. Since losing some weight and taking the vitamin D for a month I am starting to feel stronger. During a muscle biopsy I was talking to the RN and she said I should ask my nursing school if they can help me with things like transfers so I can get through school and then if my problem cannot be fixed I could work in a doctors office. My question is, do you think my nursing school would do this? I am able to adjust and reposition patients in bed, there is nothing wrong with my back and upper body strength. I think I will call the school today because they need to know by the 20th if I am attending or not. Thanks in advance for any input!

I would call the school and just ask. good luck! i'm sure they will be understanding
Thanks! I just talked to the director of the program and she said that as long as my doctor signs the physical I will be fine. She said that when they do transfers or lifting they always want you to do it with someone anyway so I would have help! I was so happy I was crying, I have been trying to do this for so long!

I am 51 years old and have the same problems with knees and legs. I got a job as a CNA and it really helped me get stronger. I am beat at the end of my shift, but I can do it, not as well as some but it gets done. You usually transfer with two people, but if you aren't strong you will hurt your partner not yourself. Get exercising, do some leg work, some treadmill and get your upper body really strong to compensate. Do lifts with your shoulders, like straight up from your sides and straight up from the shoulders. Eat well, take viatmin D and calcium, drink a lot of water sleep as much as you can. Good luck and enjoy!
