Hello Everyone,

I will be completing MS in Nursing Informatics in May. I am so worried that I will not get a job in this field and that I have spent all this time learning and now the real world is not so real in getting a job.

I have worked with the same company for the past 7 years and it is hard to become part of the HIT team at my job. Can anyone advise me as to how I can get a job as a new grad in Nursing Informatics with little experience or have I wasted my time and money?

Please help

Hi oolusola,

im sorry i wont be much of help to you. Do you mind if I ask you what school did you pursue your MS in Nursing Informatics? And how was their program? Did you have any IT experience when you entered the program? I am actually a new grad BSN and been scouting for schools for NI, I am also having the dilemma of going to the program cause i dont know if i will land a job within the NI field. An insight would be very helpful. Thank you

I attended Walden University and all my classes were online, But I had to select my practicum site my self which was fine. I enjoyed attending Walden. I am hoping that I will be able to network with someone who would be able to point me in the right direction in getting a job in this field.

All the best.

I just started a position as an NI. I actually got lucky with the position. I'm an LVN and have been working as a floor LVN for 3 years and was the Superuser at the hospital for about 1 year. Here in California, all hospitals need to switch over to computerized charting so there will be a demand for NI.

First of all, I am not a nurse in Informatics Nursing; however I am a nurse with a former IT background who (without the degree) has been offered nursing informatics jobs without seeking one! I am also a nurse who works with a nurse who recently received an MSN in Informatics who cannot get a job in Informatics Nursing (She tried). With that said, I can give you some advice that may help:

You not only need to network with IT people, it is best to become an IT geek! In other words, having a degree in IT is great, but that does not make you technically sound enough to work in the field. With that said, most in IT spend a lot of time developing his/her skills on his/her own informally.

Some examples: Set up your network at home, learn a programming language and practice daily, read about technology and hang out with others that love it too. Last but not least, talk to (network with) IT personal and find out what they like to see in nurses that is likely to join their team! Then become that nurse. :)

Oh, and if you do not get a job or internship... Try, try, try again! Good luck!

By the way, if my advice does not work, let me know. I will adjust my advice to future Informatic Nurses or individuals that want to enter IT. :)

With the Affordable Care Act in Effect, the ramifications thereof have made NI specialists in hot demand; this will continue for many years. One of the few benefits to Obamacare.
