nursing degree question

Published

Hello,

I actually found this site by accident and joined on behalf of my daughter who is a first year nursing student in college. I have a questions. When she graduates with her BS in nursing is she also an RN? I realize she would have to take an exam for her license...

Thanks!

Hi and welcome,

Yes she will have her BSN and after she passes the NCLEX exam she will be a RN.

Yes, graduating from a BSN program qualifies a person to take the state licensing exam. After they pass the board exams, they will have an RN license. If they don't take or don't pass the boards, they still have a bachelor's degree in nursing. But the BSN degree by itself won't qualify them to work as a licensed nurse.

Graduating from an associate's degree nursing program or a hospital diploma program also qualifies a person for the RN state licensing exam. Associate's degree and diploma RNs can continue their education and earn a BSN if they so choose. Many nursing jobs simply require an RN license and the type of college degree doesn't matter. For some jobs or employers, a BSN is preferred or required.
