I see a lot of your mentioning unions, but I have yet to see anything about unions in my area. How do you find out if there is one? Do all hospitals have unions?
Looking for some knowledge here

Currently, only a minority of hospitals in the US are organized into unions. Union density is highest in California, with New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and a number of others having pretty high levels of union organization. States in the south and southwest tend to have few if any organized nurses, since state laws and local culture make it harder to unionize. You describe your location as "mid-atlantic" Many of the states in that area - at least as I interpret it - have state nurses assns. with collective bargaining arms. I'd start there. Go to the web site of your state assn and look for links to collective bargaining information.
Those state assns have sort of dual personalities as both professional society and union. This tends to create some internal tensions that some manage pretty well and others not so well.
