Hello,

Just trying to refine my questions and my thread titles. :)

Are there any nurse colposcopists here? In another thread I asked if it mattered which my specialty was in order to become a colposcopists but, it seems from what I found that it does not.

I have worked with several in the past. They were Ob/gyn Nurse Practitioners who had taken a certification course in colposcopy. I hope that was what you were asking about. If not - ignore this!

I am currently in the process of becoming a nurse colposcopist. I took a course, Comprehensive Colposcopy, by the American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP). Now I am in the process of completing the "mentor program" in which I had to find a mentor who met a set of criteria by the ASCCP to supervise me in 25 colpos and there are some other guidelines that go along with this. Once you complete at least 25 colpos, you submit your records to the ASCCP and they issue you a certification. There is a fee for the course and also for the mentor program. An NP can perform colpo without having to go through this, if their collaborating physician mentors them, says they are competent and it is in their collaborative practice agreement.

Also, you do not have to be a women's health NP to perform colpo. My degree is in Adult and Oncology.

I hope this helps.

Thanks you CrunchRN,

I was hoping that it wasn't a requirement that I be an OB/GYN NP, (turns out though that I don't). My only concern is comptetitiveness for that field making it even more difficult for acceptance into the graduate program I am trying for.

Thank you again!

I am a nurse colposcopist through the ASCCP- with an FNP degree. You don't have to have any particular specialty- I highly recommend their 4 day course- it is wonderful.!
