I'm thinking of applying for a job at my local hospital.....after you complete the first quarter of nursing school you can be hired as a Nurse Tech II which is basically the same as a CNA. The thing I do not understand is how they expect you to know everything a CNA does. I mean yes I've changed briefs, bed sheets etc but I do not do it often. I've had 6 days of clinicals in 2 quarters....and I hear you do 1-3 days of orientation then they put you on the floor. Is that common?
I want a part-time job while in nursing school and this would fit the bill but I am worried that I'll mess something up.

If you really just don't feel comfortable, you can review your procedure manuals. Also, many community college bookstores carry CNA manuals at low cost. Reading it would ensure that you know everything that traditionally trained CNAs would learn in the classroom.
To tell you the truth, many CNA students come out of school not knowing everything about the job, either. They only have a limited clinical experience and do not get to practice skills until they are "perfect." That experience and confidence comes through jumping in and "getting your hands dirty" while working. It takes several months, but that confidence DOES develop. Just being around other CNAs, you will start to learns some "tricks of the trade."
It is common to only have a few days of orientation. In my experience, people learn better by learning things for themselves. You'd be surprised how quickly you will "pick up" the job. Good luck to you!
