NP DEA LICENSING

Howdy Fellow Nurses. So I am a CCRN of over 8 years and now a AGACNP-BC in CA. Basically my question is in regards to my attaining my DEA license. Do I need to be hired first before applying for it, or can I apply for it without a current provider job? I would be a hospitalist in the near future or intensivist ordering schedule II and more.

My understanding is that you have to have a "sponsor" of sorts who reviews/monitors your cases/charts (from my recollection of when my best friend was getting here DEA as a CNM). So yeah, you would need to be employed.

I fully admit that I may have an incomplete/incorrect recollection of the process, though.
