New Grad RN - Need Advice

Published

Like many others I will graduate in May (RN). I enjoy Obstetrics (L&D) especially. In my town there are only two hospitals and one isn't hiring now and the other doesn't have openings in L&D or Women's Health. What would be the best position to take to eventually achieve this goal?

PCU - VERY BUSY FLOOR -1:4-5 ratio, step down from ICU (half are sent back up)

ICU - high acuity 1:2 (they recommend not hiring new grads)

Med Surg - (dirty-floor) 1:6-7 ratio

Med Surg - Surgical,("clean") , 1:5

CCC - Cardiac Concentrated Care (post open hearts, etc) 1:4 ratio

Any ideas, the only other option is to drive 45 min. one way to other hospital. HELP:uhoh3:

Thanks -

They are pretty removed from L&D. I gather there are no positions even in post-partum?

Anyone probably would get you the skills in assessment and organization that you would need.

I would stay away from the one with the ratio of 1:6-7, that's tough for a new grad. The cardiac unit might be a good place to work, since you will hopefully have time to learn cardiac rhythms, lab interpretation as well as physical assessments.

Good luck.
